Five Years!

UPDATE February 23, 2014

I'm approaching my fifth anniversary on Spark! I dropped 50 pounds, then gained a bunch back. I'm stuck at the 15 pound mark, and my goal is to take it off by August.

I also passed the bar exam! Yay! And now I'm practicing law. Since there are no jobs out there, I'm working in solo practice. Not much money is coming in yet, but the work is there and so the income will follow. My goal is to be working truly full time by August.

Goals for Spring:
1) Swim three to four times per week, run/walk or bike as often as I can.
2) Stick to my standard low carb diet. I need to lose 15 pounds.
3) Continue taking court appointments and start marketing myself, by developing a website, and through word of mouth.

Hi Laurie,

Thanks for your great comment on my “bikes and beer” blog. Originally, I wrote a long introductory section on the mystical connection of mountain bikes and beer. However, the original blog lacked focus and was way too long. I took the beer section out. The beer section also included a photo and description of the best mountain bike magazine called “Dirt Rag”, which offers reviews of non-mainstream bikes and craft beer.

I actually have a collection of “lost Spark blogs”. These are blogs I wrote, and decided not to post. For example, I wrote one blog about my children’s participation in college athletics. Unintentionally, the blog was a dark story of the exploitive side elite athletes. I realized this blog, that I called “The Breakfast of Champions”, was too disturbing to post in Spark.

I wrote another blog comparing the $300 Mongoose fat bike with my $3,500 907 fat bike. When I reviewed the blog it looked like I was disrespecting affordable bikes, which is not what I intended. I never posted that blog.

In all, I have about a dozen blogs that I did not post. However, I really have a difficult time judging how a blog is going to be received. I am very careful about what I post.

Thanks, Bruce

Hi Laurie,

Thanks for you nice comment on my “Official Fitness Test” blog. I have always exceled at agility tests. And yes, coming in ahead of younger and presumably “fitter” officials was oddly satisfying.

Unfortunately, getting clobbered while working a game is one of the hazards of being an official in a fast moving and unpredictable game. I get knocked down about once a season. I generally work as the umpire, which is the guy on the defensive side of the field that blockers and the ball carrier tend to come toward. Some umpires get hit a lot more. Sometimes, getting hit by players is just unavoidable.

Thanks, Bruce

Thanks for the spark goodie and the welcome to the swim group.

I look forward to getting to know everyone and, hopefully, becoming a better swimmer.
