Time to move forward...create a new future

Alright I’m finally getting around to updating this thing. I’ve been overweight my entire life. I’ve never known what it’s like to be skinny and was teased about my weight at a young age. I was never in the popular crowd at school, even though I did some things I am not proud of now, to try and be in it. I always thought it was due to my weight that I wasn’t popular. Elementary and high school were pretty much hell for me. I don’t remember what size I was in high school…probably a 14 or 16. I can’t even recall the last time I wore something in the single digits. After high school came the college years where I finally had a great group of friends but we partied…a lot. So all the drinking I did along with all the junk food and late night snacks led to some extra poundage. I hit about a size 18/20 in college. I remember being in several weddings one summer and one of the dresses I had to order was a size 24. Now I think about that and I gasp but at that time I didn’t do anything about it. I just kept living life the way I always had…relying on my staples of alcohol and McDonalds.

Throughout this whole time I don’t really know what I weighed. At one time in high school I did try and lose some weight by making better eating choices but that didn’t last long. I also tried the cabbage soup diet in high school – blah. In college I joined the gym a couple of times, would go “running” with my friend who was in sports which we would follow up with some chips & dip, and joined Curves. The one time in my life I do remember losing weight was the summer before my junior year of college. All of my friends had gone home for the summer and I was stuck in town by myself and completely depressed. I joined weight watchers and started eating right and worked out every day after work. And then school started and all my friends came back and those habits went out the window.

After college I got a job and moved to a town in MN I had never even been to. My old habits kept on for a few months and I went back to my college town almost every weekend. When I didn’t go back I stayed holed up in my apt eating crap and watching TV. I travel a lot for my job and so I obviously eat out when I’m on the road and then we’d go have drinks almost every night.

My waking up moment was right after Christmas in 2006. We took family photos and I looked at the picture of myself and was disgusted. Once I got home after Christmas I knew I had to make a change and that day I went and bought a scale and joined the biggest loser club. In 2 months I was moving to yet another new city and I wanted to have a new life at that time because I wasn’t happy with the way things were going. I joined a gym and started working out and found ways to workout when I was on the road for work. For the first few months I just browsed around on the website and then I came across a great group called the Foxy Ladies. I learned so much from this group of women and had one of the best support systems a girl could ask for. One of the ladies also traveled for work so I learned how to eat when I was on the road and any sort of question I had there were people there with advice.

Throughout 2007 I did some amazing things. I became a runner which I never ever thought I would do in this lifetime. I lost over 50 lbs. I made some great friends. I flew to Vegas to spend the weekend with ladies I had never ever met and hiked Red Rock Canyon. I did my first 5K. I had self-confidence for the first time I can remember. I started a new life which is exactly what I wanted to do.

In 2008 I also did some pretty amazing things. I decided I wanted to get serious about running. I did my first 5K in under 30 minutes. I did my first 10K and ran it in 1hr 2 min. I inspired people including two of my closest friends to lose weight and I ran a half marathon with both of them in the fall. I actually ran 3 half marathons with my first one being called at 10 miles due to the fact that we were running in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike and the route got flooded. My second half marathon was a trail race which is incredibly difficult. And my third half marathon was the race I did with my friends and I didn’t run this race for me, I ran it to encourage a friend of mine and ran and walked with her the whole time and encouraged her to push it when she didn’t think she could do it anymore.

Other things I did in 2008. I started binge eating in January or February of 08 and gained almost all the weight I had lost back. It baffles my mind how I could do this to myself after reading what I had all accomplished before that. I had never ever binge ate before in my life and by binge eating I don’t mean going over my calories by a little, I mean eating an entire box of doughnut in one sitting followed up by anything else I had in the house. It started out I would eat what I had in the house, even if was healthy. So I fixed that by not keeping snacky items in my house. Then it got to the point where I would leave my house to go to get food and I would stop at the gas station and get doughnuts and then go to DQ and get ice cream and maybe stop at Walgreens and get cereal and milk. How absolutely ridiculous is that?

I knew I had a problem and knew I wanted to fix it. Throughout all of this I still was doing my workouts however you can probably imagine they were getting harder because I was eating such crap and gaining weight. So I started going to an eating disorder clinic because yes binge eating is an eating disorder and people can have a food addiction. I went for a few months and saw a therapist and a nutritionist and felt that I wasn’t getting the help I needed. I thought by going some light was going to go off and I was going to figure out why I was doing this and I was going to be fixed. Well that wasn’t the case. She asked me all these things about my relationship with food and my relationship with friends and family and nothing that I felt was getting me to where I wanted to be so I stopped going.

Somewhere along the way I cancelled my membership to the BLC so I no longer had that support system and joined Spark. I joined all these different groups and told myself this was the time to do it…but something would happen and I’d binge. Shortly after joining I came across two girls who I had met outside of Spark and they were part of an amazing group that welcomed me and provide me the support and encouragement I need through this process. I’ve been rather sporadic on the site since joining as I’d be really motivated and on all the time and then I’d have a setback and ignore the site. A very destructive pattern. In June I officially started weighing myself again and am back to making my life my own and making positive changes.

Someone recently asked me what happened at the beginning of 08? Why did I start binging? My therapist used to ask me this all the time and I would tell her I didn’t know, nothing happened. The only thing I could think of was that I was studying for my CPA, getting minimal sleep, surviving on coffee and eating to keep myself awake at night to study. The only other thing that changed in my life at this time was that my sister got engaged but that in no way had any affect on me or my eating habits. That’s what I used to tell her. I now realize that she didn’t believe me because she always asked me about my family – every session. I also now realize that she was right because it did affect me, more than I ever knew.

Every day is a struggle for me. I’ve learned that I need to plan. I need to prepare my meals ahead of time and know what I’m doing for workouts. I need to surround myself with supportive people. I’m currently reading a book that is a reminder of everything my therapist said to me when I was seeing her. I need to assess if I’m really hungry or if it’s emotions that is making me hungry. I need to start feeling – I can’t be the girl everyone relies on to constantly say yes or say that I’m ok every day. Things frustrate me, stress me out, make me happy, make me sad, and I need to feel all of these things and not stuff these feelings with food. I need to strive for progress and not perfection.

So how am I going to get there? Well I’m going to continue examining my life and choices, continue feeling, continue striving to have a healthy relationship with food. I’m probably forever going to be a calorie counting, food-weighing girl because that’s what works for me. I’m going to continue pushing myself in workouts and not settle for what-is. Continue surrounding myself with positive people and many many more things. I want to be a healthy individual who can partake in any activity that is thrown my way and not have to sit on the sidelines and watch life pass me by because of my weight.

~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~! GOALS ~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!

So each month I am going to continue making and updating goals. I also have some long term goals:
* Reach goal weight by the next wedding I'm in which is next August. To do this I have to lose about 1 lb per week. Totally attainable.
* Learn how to have a healthy relationship with food and feed my body with what it needs. Think of my body as a machine and know what I need to eat to fuel it.
* Raise my self confidence.
* Start running again once I get below 200 lbs.
* Next year run at least one 5K every month from March to October.
* Run at least one 10K next summer
* Run the 10 miler during the Twin Cities Marathon
* In the summer 2011 get back to doing half marathons. Do the Kansas City half again to see if I can beat my old time. Do the Fargo Half Marathon.
* Wear a two piece bathing suit, not a tankini.

Hey!! I'm hoping to go to Central America for roughly 10-12 days in either early January or mid-March. Looking at Nicaragua and Honduras with possible jaunts to Guatemala and/or El Salvador. Goals are to tour and possibly stay at a coffee farm or two, check out some hostels, do some hiking, and learn about the history and culture. If you're interested in joining, let me know! Right now tickets are in the $550-750 range, but I'd like to purchase in the next couple of weeks because the prices are changing daily.
