I joined SparkPeople while eating a dunkin' stick. Quite an auspicious start. I'm not sure how I found SparkPeople - I think I may have seen it mentioned in an email I subscribe to. So I thought I'd check it out, look around, not super-serious. You know, no committment, I didn't have to give too much info to sign up, and hey, it's free.

The first thing I did was start tracking my food. I've never been very good at that, but this was nice because a lot of food was already in the system, so I just had point and click. Day one: Huh. I went over on calories (not a surprise), and wow, I went over on carbs. First discovery: I eat a lot of carbs! What are carbs? I always thought pasta = carbs. Turns out carbs are in a lot of food besides pasta.

After several days of going over, I found that I really wanted to stay within my numbers. I actually kept myself from an evening snack one day so that I wouldn't go over. This is not normal behavior for me.

What about weight? Was I loosing any weight? I lost 2 pounds; that isn't much, but still, I felt good about it. Then I weighed myself mid-week. Why do I torture myself with the scale? You guessed it, I gained. I didn't give up though. I just thought, I need to be a little more serious about watching what I eat (and how much). I told myself, even if I didn't lose, I was drinking way less pop and way more water than I did before, and that's healthy, even if the scale didn't make me happy.

Exercise is important too. I have been trying to do hi-low aerobics with my daughter. We only do about 10 minutes at a time, but it's good. It helps. I can feel it, and we have a great time. My daughter doesn't really need to lose any weight, but exercise is still good for her, and we laugh, and really enjoy that time.

I found a great recipe here that my family liked too; I can't wait to make it again! There is so much information and so many things to explore on SparkPeople, it's a fun adventure - I never said THAT about a diet plan!

So anyway, thats the story of my SparkPeople beginning. Good luck to all those who give it a try.
