"I took the road less traveled by, and that has made all the difference." - Robert Frost
My name is Melissa and I have been overweight all my life, but slimmer now than I have ever been before. My highest was 240. At 5"4, I wasn't just round, I was rectangular. Why? Well aside from some lovely medications and med complications, food used to make me happy. USED TO. (I can't blame it all on the meds. It's time to take some of the responsibility.) Since I found the support at spark and my love of spin and my renewed love of dance at the gym, I no longer have to rely on food to comfort ...
It's time to take some of the responsibility.) Since I found the support at spark and my love of spin and my renewed love of dance at the gym, I no longer have to rely on food to comfort me. If I am angry, it helps to work it off. If I am sad, food is not the friend I turn to. If I am bored, I do not look to food as entertainment. I no longer emotionally eat at all! Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy food, but I can control what I eat, how much I eat, and when I eat it now. I enjoy the taste, not just the quantity. So what does all that result in? Well, since early June of 2009, I have gone from a 16 at 212 lbs. to a 4, as of October, 2010. But I am still chubby, so I will continue to work on it. When you are short, any weight seems to show. Having never ever been this small, I always thought being this size would be a slim, trim 2.0 upgrade. Nope, not yet! No amount of spin or sexy dance classes can take away the frame God gave me. Who knows where this journey will take me, but I am up for anything. I have crazy strong muscular legs and ok arms-not the best, but better- and I am working on my squishy (albeit diminishing) middle. I know there are muscles under there with all the ab work I do....somewhere! Of course I have my walls. I have a heart condition, I have injuries, family pressure, backhanded compliments, etc. But nothing is more important to me than me...finally. I am not going to go back to the old me. I simply can't; it is too depressing to consider. There is only one for that ticker to move and it is forward progress, ticking down on the scale! I love the supportive friends I have at spark and am always looking for more, so feel free to add me and message me. My personal messages from friends are what keeps me on track. Side note: If you are a teacher, i would love to hear from you. I am learning it is hard always eating in a rush with the demainding schedule i have. I am learning to manage it, butit is tricky. I would love to hear your tricks for being a super sparkler while exhausted at school. UPDATE: In late October of 2012, I was diagnosed with major food allergies. Most significantly, I am allergic to nickel--not just the metal, but nickel which is found in food. Basically if it is really healthy and good to eat, it seems that is is poison to me. If you are allergic to nickel, let's do this together! It's a new chapter for me so I am starting 2013 on Spark to work through it with the friends who have supported me best with my food challenges. :) Spark on!

Currently, my program is to manage my eating while paying attention to my food allergies.
Personal Information:
My name is Melissa and I live in Los Angeles with all those who are sucked and stitched. But I want to lose it the right way! ;)
Other Information:
A bunch of random stuff I like: I like to look at art and make art. I love to listen to music, especially if it's live. I like to read (biographies and pretty much anything). I love fashion; I like to make my own things and have since had to buy a new dress form since joining spark! :) I love movies and have about 400 dvds. I depend on the ones that make me laugh the most. That's all I can think of. Anything else you want to know, just ask.
