To answer your questions:
I started on SP a few years ago actually, so I had already had learned how to navigate the site. It IS overwhelming to sit down and see how large the site is and how much it encompasses. Start just by following the steps in the fast break (the action steps are listed on your start page).
I track all my food, down to the three jellybeans I grab while walking past the candy dish, I find that not giving myself an accurate account of what I'm eating is only lying and cheating myself.
I do use the spark points - for the most part. I don't post on the boards every day, and I only post a blog 1-2x a week, but mostly I play along to keep myself active on SP, which helps me remain involved and accountable. I could care less about what "point trophy" I have, but I do notice that when Im more involved on the site, I'm more likely to be sticking to my diet.
I do have some goals, but not really hard numbers. I aim for loosing 1lb a week, but I have it calculating for me to lose 2lbs a week. I typically fall somewhere in between. I havent posted motivational pictures and such around, but I did google for a few images and put them on a scrapbook page. I dont really have a size or weight goal, as much as I have a goal for activities (physical fitness and strength), and for not spilling out over my clothes. LOL
I don't follow the meal plans, although I do look occasionally at them. I honestly, don't cook that much and like cold cereal too much. I browse through sparkrecipes when Im looking for some new inspiration. One thing I have found thats been a key for me, isn't just balancing calories, fat, carbs, proteins. I have SP track other nutrients for me as well: folate, fiber, cholesterol (because I have high cholesterol), calcium, iron and sodium. When I notice a trend of always being deficient in one area, I make an effort to increase it and balance the rest of my diet. My first aim was for folate - I found by hitting my folate goal (without relying on something like Total cereal LOL), the rest of my nutrients fall into line. I still have to work on iron, fiber and sodium. Right now, I'm focusing on fiber.
Also, take things slow. Like my folate goal was something that took me weeks to hit, then I added another nutrient goal. As for exercise, I aimed for 20 minutes at a time and then gradually increased time and intensity. Now Im happy with the time, but I'm looking for ways to mix up my routine and still burn calories.
Mostly, after the boys are in bed and Travis and I are hanging out watching a show, I have my laptop on and work on earning a few sparkpoints and learning more about nutrients and different exercises.
Just find a rhythm and pace you can handle and take it a little at a time.
