I've narrowed it down to two: one is a wrist-band style (I think it's actually Samsung that I bookmarked) and the other is the Spark tracker, which has a "wear it on your shoe" option - the shoe thing appeals to me, but the wrist-band type records pulse, so... I'm working on it, lol. I can see, though, that placement could make a difference. Your method of trialing it against another source is a good one.
