Journey to a healthier me

My name is Laurie. I am mom to 3 beautiful girls and wife of 20+ years to an amazing guy. I graduated with my BSN on May 9th and passed my NCLEX June 2, 2010. I have been working as an RN on a cardiac floor since then.

I have spent my life trying many fad diets and non-fad diets. I've joined the gyms, paid for a year or two and only set foot in them a few times. I joined Weight Watchers and NutriSystem too many times to count. I lost weight and put it back on + 10%. ...

I have spent my life trying many fad diets and non-fad diets. I've joined the gyms, paid for a year or two and only set foot in them a few times. I joined Weight Watchers and NutriSystem too many times to count. I lost weight and put it back on + 10%. Wishing weight away and trying to lose it all at once definitely does not work.

The opening of a Gold's Gym 3 blocks from my house coincided with my preventive doctor's visit and the heaviest weight that I've ever had documented with my physician. So I joined. I signed up with a personal trainer. I found SparkPeople in December 2009. I love that it is FREE! I track all of my food. To date I have lost 68 pounds and continue to do so slowly and steadily at a pound a week. I have quite a ways to go, but I know that I can do it now, for real.

Update January 27, 2011
Signed up for the Gold's Transform Your Body Challenge on January 17th.

Update March 20, 2011
To date I have lost 21.3# while working the Challenge. There are 3 weeks left.

Update April 9, 2011 - End of Gold's Challenge
Total weight loss - 30#, only 15 more pounds to reach goal weight!

Update October 7, 2011
My journey took a little detour when school started up. I am back and refocused. Starting a personal 12 week challenge today. Still working toward that goal!

BMI of 22 - 24 (Healthy) MET, but got off track!
Size 8 (stretch goal size 6)
Run a 5k this summer

Size 10 clothes (stretch goal of an 8) MET!
Regular exercise routine that I'm comfortable with (met)

Nutrition:
Eat to fuel my body, not just to eat
1200 - 1600 calories/day - track in nutrition tracker

Fitness:
Strength training 2x/week
Run 20-30 min 3x / week
Square Dancing 1x / week
Yoga or one other organized fitness class at least 1x / week

Married to an amazing guy for 20+ years

In school for my Master's Degree to become a Family Nurse Practitioner

Hi Laurie ! Excited to read your new blog and hear that you are Sparking! Last time I checked in I was less motivated and with summer am BACK AT IT! I never quit! just slacked on control of emotional eating. Persevere...! Keep in touch and keep Sparking!

Been away from Spark for a few weeks. Just checking in with a few friends. Of course I would like to blame my absence on being soooo busy but denial is probably closer to the real reason. I am a teacher off for the summer and plan to redidicate to my SELF. Planning and tracking and getting off anything I have gained and that last 20! Keep in touch...
