Excellence... is not an act, but a habit

Five years ago when I turned 50 I got serious about losing weight and taking care of myself, body and soul. I got really close to my goal weight, but over a couple years I regained the weight - and then some. However, I'm determined to achieve my goal, knowing that the real challenge will be maintaining the loss when I get there.

Five years ago when I turned 50 I got serious about losing weight and taking care of myself, body and soul. I got really close to my goal weight, but over a couple years I regained the weight - and then some. However, I'm determined to achieve my goal, knowing that the real challenge will be maintaining the loss when I get there.

This time, I think I've found something that really works for me: the Beck Diet Solution. Normally I shy away from anything with the word "diet," but the subtitle "Learning to Think Like a Thin Person" really describes what it's all about, recognizing that losing weight and maintaining that loss is as much about the way you think as it is about what you eat. And maybe more....

Fortunately, the program is right in line with my general philosophy.

Five years ago when I lost 25 pounds, I stopped drinking alcohol entirely for 3 months and trained for a half marathon. I wasn't able to keep up that high level of activity, and I didn't want to stop drinking permanently.

This time, I'm focused on creating sustainable habits and practices while I'm on the journey, some of my own and some I'm learning from the Beck program. That way they'll be familiar to me when I reach my goal weight. I want to keep on learning more about how to eat well while eating healthy and how to exercise in ways that prevent injury. Because I've learned these past few years that my body isn't as resilient as it once was, and I want to be strong and active for a long time.

So, truly the goal here is more about changing my habits than reaching a number on the scale. If I can successfully build good habits, step by step, I can achieve any goal I set for myself.

My Goals:
Overall, my main goal is to make healthy living a habit in all aspects of my life: body, mind and soul.

For My Body

* Gain strength, endurance and flexibility

* Lose 20 pounds in 5 pound increments, which is just over 12% of my current weight

* At that point, consider whether or not to lose 5 more pounds.

* MAINTAIN healthy habits and a healthy weight for life.


For My Mind

* Reduce stress in my life

* Increase my self discipline

My Program:
Follow the Beck Diet Solution, changing my thinking to change my behavior

Track calories

Maintain a weekly deficit of 3,500 calories

Fitness goals:

Strength training 2-3 times/week.

Cardio: 4-5 times a week: running, elliptical, biking, walking.

Yoga at least once a week.


Reduce my stress level through meditation, yoga, writing.

Personal Information:
I feel so fortunate to have a wonderful boyfriend and two incredible grownup sons, great friends and work that I enjoy. Most of all, I am thankful for my positive outlook on life.

I have two cats and a kayak. I love travel and art.


Other Information:
The only thing I can truly control are my actions and reactions.

I practice yoga because I believe in the interconnectedness of all things.

Of course friends! And my feelings weren't hurt- mostly I was just curious. I'll try to stay more on topic - I do tend to wander, but I also have another blog for that. I appreciate your honesty.

THANK you SOOOOOO much for your input on my blog. Yes, eating slowly is a BIG plus for me! It really does work and I am so shocked that it does, given the lifetime of inhaling as I did!

I REALLY appreciate you and needed some "soothing" on the scale thing....sometimes I feel like I am the ONLY one that goes up and down...you really helped me!
