What worked for me was starting off slow with exercise...if I could just commit to a 20 minute walk everyday it didn't seem like such a big deal, and gradually I have worked up to cardio challenge and other activities and classes and 2 days with weight machines at the Y and longer walks either by myself or with my husband.
I also immediately changed my eating habits and began following the nutrition guidelines for calorie intake as well as drinking 8 glasses of water per day. I write down everything I eat now! Although I don't eat the exact menu they suggest for me I look at the calories/carbs/protein/fat/and sodium for the day and will plug in what I eat to see how I'm doing and how many calories, etc. I have left for the day. I never used to eat breakfast, but started eating wheat toast with peanut butter (or almond butter) and sliced banana and other healthy choices which made an impact on my energy level. If I have unused calories at the end of the day I usually cut up an apple and dip it in peanut butter (if I need fat and protein too).
In the mornings I spend a good 45 minutes on SparkPeople reading articles, blogs, and tracking the previous days foods...I have learned an incredible amount of info from the site.
I recently set some goals for myself which has given me a motivational boost (although my husband was a little alarmed at the 1-year keeping it off goal ($500 spending spree)! My goals are on one of my blogs if you need some ideas.
So start out entering what you want to lose and by when and let SP give you a menu to follow and then just jump in and try to stick with your streak. I'd be happy to help along the way - I've been doing this seriously since Jan. 2 even though I joined in Nov., but I really want to wear a bathing suit without shorts or a cover up over it this summer too!
Thanks for adding me as a friend! Let's keep each other going!
