I started small by walking 15 minutes two to three times a day. Then, cleaned up my diet. Then, two months later I added weight training. I started slow but gained strength quickly. By April of the next year I went and watched my first figure show. I decided to do it. I researched on bodybuilding.com on how to eat and train and compete. I learned that I am carb sensitive so to get to my current weight and be ready to compete. I limit my carbs slowly and time them for when my body needs them the most: first thing in the morning, pre and post workout (weight training). Green veggies are not counted in carbs so I can eat all the asparagus, green beans, spinach, and broccoli I want. Also, I slowly add more and more cardio. Right now I am doing 2 45 minutes cardio sessions a day. I lift weights 5 days a week. You can see my diet on my tracker and I blog many of my workouts. I hope this helps answer your question.
