On Track Until Motherhood Hit...

I was never interested in being fit until I noticed I was gaining a few pounds every year around age 26. So, at that time, my husband and I joined a gym and really enjoyed working out together. It took me a while to accept that I had to change my diet...I figured I could eat the way I always ate and add some exercise and it would all work out. It wasn't until I started to see a diet/nutrition person at the gym that I started to lose some weight. I had my body fat checked every week, so even if the scale didn't change, I could see that I was at least losing fat and gaining muscle. I maybe had 15-20 to lose, and at that age, it didn't seem that hard. I got to my lowest weight, then went on vacation and had a hard time getting back into my routine. The problem was, after vacation, the scale didn't change, but I had lost 7 lbs of muscle and gained 7 lbs of fat. But I still weighed 129! It was really hard to convince myself to get back to my routine when I could fall off the wagon so hard during vacation and still weigh 129! I spent the next year trying to get back to my routine, and gained about 20 lbs back.

Then I got pregnant, which I was thrilled about, but all bets were off as far as diet. I was so sick for those first three months, I had to eat whatever tasted good to me. And it had to be fast and frequent. We quit the gym as part of readjusting our finances to buy a house, and within 9 months I gained 40 lbs.

The good news is, I lost it all before I got pregnant a second time, using the South Beach Diet, which I still very much believe in. But I gained 50 lbs with my second pregnancy. My daughter is two, and I am still working on those last 10 lbs from being pregnant, plus another 20 or so to get back in the 120s.

So I join Sparkpeople and I punch in my nutrition info, and find out that my "healthy" salad that I have been faithfully eating for a couple years is 1000 calories!! This is an incredible revelation...I just couldn't understand why I wasn't losing. But that mayo that I mix in with the canned chicken has been killing me!

So now I should be on my way to losing some weight...given the calories in that salad, I'm amazed I haven't gained anything....I've weighed the same for all of 2008. I'm so looking forward to 2009, now that I know that this salad that I've been putting so much faith in has been undermining me all this time!
