I took a design and marketing class in college. The professor ask what the purpose of televison programming was. Entertainment? No. Information? No.Keep your fat tush in the chair between commercials? (my answer)! Ding Ding Ding give that man a cigar!
By watching commercial content I was fascinated to discover that women are fans of the SyFy (formerly SciFi) Channel. I have never seen so many ads for feminine hygiene products outside of the Lifetime Channels. Who knew?
I also like to use commercials to educate my boys. They are now fully aware that society views all men as deadbeats and idiots. On the other hand, Johnson & Johnson gets very high marks from me as a company because when they feature a father caring for his child there is no need for a mother to come rushing to his rescue. "Not for MY baby," declares a dad when the annoucer suggests that any baby shampoo is good enough for your baby. That's it. No need for an approving mom or a directing mom. He knows what he is doing. I identiy with him. And it works. I bought Johnson & Johnson products for my babies.
Yep, advertising is fascinating. By the way, I love Mad Men ... hate the character Don, I have no sympathy for him or any man who cheats on his family like he does, but I love the stories. 1734 days ago
