One day...one week...one month...one year...a lifetime.

Two years ago I turned 40...and had a "rock bottom" moment. I realized I was 60 pounds overweight and only 10 years away from turning 50, the same age my dad was when he had a heart attack and emergency heart bypass surgery. I had severe acid reflux disease that was aggrivating the asthma I've had most of my life. My triglyceride levels were through the roof. My doctor warned I was at "high risk" of developing diabetes. I was referred to a bariatric physician who specializes in helping ...

I was referred to a bariatric physician who specializes in helping patients lose weight through non-surgical means. It's not exaggerating to say the man saved my life. I went from 183 pounds to 125 on the Optifast program.

Unfortunately, this past year I went through some tough times. Stress, anxiety and depression led me to my usual downfall, emotional eating, and having my exercise program derailed by a hernia operation did not help. I gained about 25 pounds back. :-(

I don't want to make the same mistakes, so I have joined this site to get back on track. (Again on the advice of my wonderful bariatric doc!) I am working to gain control of both my mental and physical health, and striving to develop a realistic and healthy eating and exercise lifestyle.

Had a few setbacks recently, but I am readjusting, shifting my priorities, and getting back on track.

My Goals:
Lose 30 pounds.

Maintain my weight loss.

Train for a 5K (with my hubby!) using the Couch- To-5K Program.

2 strength training videos a week.

Yoga class at least once a week.

10 minutes of meditation every day.

My Program:
I have a family history of metabolic syndrome, heart disease, and type II diabetes, so I am striving to be a low-carb, high-protien eater. My goal is to eat no more than 125g of carbs per day.

I still use Optifast shakes and bars as a fallback, when I am too busy to cook or need a quick snack (I try to eat every 3 hours to avoid excessive hunger.)

Personal Information:
I have a degree in journalism and went back to school for my paralegal certification a few years ago. Something of a career nomad, I have spent time in public relations, advertising, technical writing, and law. Currently I make my living doing regulatory data management for a medical device manufacturer.

I have been happily married to a great guy for17 years. We have no kids of our own, but we help his sister raise her daughter, my beautiful and amazing 4-year-old niece. My husband just graduated with honors from an echocardiography (cardiac ultrasound) program, successfully passed his boards (YES!!!) and is actively seeking employment.

I'm an AZ native, raised in the mountains, now living in the desert. It's a beautiful state that, unfortunately, is run by some very ugly people.


Other Information:
I am a music nut; I love music in all genres, especially heavy metal, classical and Celtic. I am always on the lookout for new sounds. But ironically, I am not a musician (unless you count my years as a mediocre soprano in my high school and college choirs.)

I like to write, cook (a blessing and a curse), practice yoga, and spend time in nature.

Spiritually I consider myself pagan-oriented, and I am developing a meditation practice.

I am waaaay too fond of chocolate and Mexican food, and spend waaaaay too much time on the computer. I am trying to learn to love vegetables and exercise!

Hi Karla-
Thanks for adding me as a friend. I'll do the same. So....you're having car problems hey? I know how that feels. Last month my car went belly up...crying for a new transmission. The car only had 49,000 miles on it so needless to say, I was a little upset but I had a feeling the tranny was going out. Since I was going to have it fixed, I told my mechanic to check everything...$4000 dollars later it's like brand new. (This happened about the middle of the month. Then, on June 25th, I got hit twice all within an hour. So the car is back in the shop again. At least no one was hurt. I hope you get both cars back without to much damage to the ol' wallet.

From what I understand LA fitness members cannot go to Pure fitness only the other way around. bummer I know! I have yet to go to LA but I wouldnt mind che king it out sometime.

Karla! HI! My name is Judy. I live in phoenix at 35th ave and Greenway. I workout at Pure Fitness on 43rd and Thunderbird rd. PF was recently bought out by LA fitness and I now have access to those Gyms as well. I have been reading your sparkpage and some of the things posted there and think you and I could possibly become friends. I would love to add you on here and get to know you.
