Okay... I am trying like heck to lose these last few pounds... My family thinks I am insane, but I have had this goal for some time and I really want to reach it... I am a very busy single mom with three beautiful girls. I work full time as a teacher, and believe me that job doesn't end at 3:00 like most people think. I have to find the time to take care of me and get this done.

Thanks for the blog comment. I'm happy to answer your questions (which I anticipated and should have put into the blog itself, but was in a hurry).

The point of the article, though he doesn't go into specific exercises to replace these "no-nos", is to say that using single-joint exercises is not functional in nature (does not employ movements in the way the body naturally moves in normal life/daily activity) and therefore puts too much stress on the joints and do not cause a high enough metabolic expenditure to make them worthwhile.

SO, the answer (and the way I train) is to skip these movements in favor of moves that work multiple muscle groups together synergistically. Not only will you burn more calories, but your muscles work together the way nature intended to protect your joints and keep the WHOLE body in balance.

The exercises I speak of are things like bodyweight & free weight squats, push-ups, lunges (reverse lunges are better for anyone with tricky knees) pull-ups, planks (and the myriad variations thereof). If you did ONLY the exercises I just mentioned (especially if you include some variations, of which there are hundreds), and did them in a circuit style, you honestly would never NEED to do anything else, and with proper nutrition, you'd have a healthy, strong, shapely rockin body!

Of course, variety is the spice of life I know...but if anyone is interested in being in my free test group when I roll out the beat version of my fitness program, let me know. I will be included tons of variety, and EVERY single exercise will be a comprehensive compound movement that will squeeze the most possible benefit out of of every second you spend training. (and NOT lead to wear-and-tear injuries like the ones described in the article)
