Getting Skinny is More Fun Than Getting Fat

My page title is my new mantra. So simple, but it took me a long time to realize this!!!

I have been a proud and happy member of SparkPeople for about 7 years. It is an extremely important part of my life. I feel like I am the ultimate work in progress. After an initial loss of 40 lbs. in 6 months, I have struggled. My struggles have included gaining back some of the weight and just bouncing around at a certain level. I think things are finally moving in the right direction ...

I have been a proud and happy member of SparkPeople for about 7 years. It is an extremely important part of my life. I feel like I am the ultimate work in progress. After an initial loss of 40 lbs. in 6 months, I have struggled. My struggles have included gaining back some of the weight and just bouncing around at a certain level. I think things are finally moving in the right direction again.

I have become more focused on rules and personal accountability. I am in the process of developing my own set of "Skinny Rules" that I can live with but are essentially non-negotiable. I have some rules in my head and this is evolving, but it will get done.

I have been plagued by the sugar monster. I have made quite a few false starts in my efforts to control my sugar consumption. However, I have read many books and watched many videos about the dangerous effects of sugar, and they are finally beginning to sink in. About a month ago, with the start of the BLC-19 challenge, I pledged to give up cookies and a certain milkshake for the duration of the challenge. At this point, I have stayed absolutely true to that pledge. I did allow myself some slack by not insisting on giving up all sugary treats, but I have had remarkably few of those and find that my desire for them has diminished. I am actually enjoying my new eating plan immensely; hence the new title for this page.

I have lived in Northern NJ for most of my life. I have two great kids, a 29 year old daughter (recently minted attorney) and a 25 year old son who is trying to break into the world of college basketball coaching. I have also been married to the same guy for 36 years.

Other Information:
For most of my life I was not much of a reader. About six years ago I started listening to books on tape during a long commute, and it became my passion. I started out loving James Patterson and Michael Connelly. I am now into the Stephanie Plum and Kinsey Millhone series.

It's easy to lose focus on your goal when you experience bad emotions and feel like it makes no sense to go on longer. before you make the final decision, ask your self a few questions... like

1. Would you be happy if you gave up and your life remained the same?
Sometimes all it takes to keep going is to remind yourself of the end goal.

2. What's the worst that can happen if you keep going and don't achieve your goal?
Arnold Schwarzenegger once said: "Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength."

Even if you do not achieve your goal, the person you had become when striving to reach it was probably more than worth it.

3. How would it feel to tell other people why you gave up?
Would you be happy telling your friend you gave up because you prefer watching TV to becoming a healthier person?

4. What would you tell your cloest friend if you traded places with her?
Would you tell her to throw in the towel or motivate her to keep pushing...try something different to reach her goals...

Ok... team...let's regroup.
Lets take a moment to step back take a deep breath and focus.

To lead we must develop three key abilities:

1. the ability to THINK emoticon
let's remember our GOAL....think about it, focus on it!

2. the ability to SEE emoticon
let's use our inner skill of observation, which will lead us to insight and foresight. Every time you enter a room to take notice, this will help you be more aware.

3. the ability to ACT emoticon
Lets use our plan, our focus to see become aware of our objectives and act in a manner that will get us to the finish line.
