Scared Healthy

My name is Heather, and I've been scared into getting healthy. For years I've been extremely obese and a daily smoker who rationalized not having to quit because I wasn't a heavy smoker. I took my health for granted even though I had frequent chest pains, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and shortness of breath.

My name is Heather, and I've been scared into getting healthy. For years I've been extremely obese and a daily smoker who rationalized not having to quit because I wasn't a heavy smoker. I took my health for granted even though I had frequent chest pains, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and shortness of breath.

On 4/18/09 I went to the ER for terrible abdominal pain and was diagnosed with diverticulitis, an infection of the colon. Diverticulitis is simply a complication of an underlying disease, diverticulosis, the formation of small pockets in the colon wall. This condition is common in older people and is starting to occur more often in peoply my age. I had many risk factors for the disease: obesity, frequent overeating, a low fiber diet, and a sedentary lifestyle. Plus, smoking is a major risk factor in complications of diverticulosis.

I was fortunate that my first case of diverticulitis was relatively mild. I was in the hospital overnight on IV antibiotics and took oral antibiotics (2 kinds) for a week after that. But I know that luck can only last so long. Without a major diet and lifestyle change, another attack is nearly inevitable, and the next one could require surgery to remove the damaged portions of my colon. I will do just about anything it takes to make sure that is unnecessary.
