Becoming Iron
Well - this is it. From this point until November of 2013, my entire focus is on freeing myself from the mistakes of the past and grabbing my dreams. Bit by bit, I am re-creating myself - into the person I CAN become... into an athlete. To paraphrase John "The Penguin" Bingham: "I cry for the child inside me who wanted to be an athlete but failed so many times before. I cry for the young girl who wanted to dance but never made the cut. I cry for the young woman ...
I cry for the young woman who broke so many promises to herself and to others. I disappointed myself, my family, my friends... I can't change any of that, but with that final step across that finish line, I will erase a lifetime of disappointment with myself." I have spent too many years making excuses and giving up on myself. I have 70 weeks (yes, really) ahead of me - that will be HARD. I will work hard, rest, and repeat - until I am ready to take on the challenge. In November 2013 - I WILL become an Ironman. (No, they don't do gender-specific... EVERYONE becomes an Iron"man".) My first step - Oklahoma City - September 22nd - the Redman Triathlon event (exactly 10 weeks from today!). I will be doing the 1/2 iron Aqua/bike event. 1.2 mile swim and 56 mile bike ride. Today, with 10 weeks to go, I was barely able to do 5 laps in the pool (less than .25 of a mile) due to my torn rotator cuff. I could only do 4 miles on the bike outdoors. the tiniest fraction of what I must do in 10 short weeks. Every moment of my time, every drop of my energy, must be focused on my goals. I CAN. I WILL. Don't believe me? Watch me...
