Becoming Iron

Well - this is it. From this point until November of 2013, my entire focus is on freeing myself from the mistakes of the past and grabbing my dreams. Bit by bit, I am re-creating myself - into the person I CAN become... into an athlete.

To paraphrase John "The Penguin" Bingham:

"I cry for the child inside me who wanted to be an athlete but failed so many times before. I cry for the young girl who wanted to dance but never made the cut. I cry for the young woman ...

I cry for the young woman who broke so many promises to herself and to others. I disappointed myself, my family, my friends... I can't change any of that, but with that final step across that finish line, I will erase a lifetime of disappointment with myself."

I have spent too many years making excuses and giving up on myself. I have 70 weeks (yes, really) ahead of me - that will be HARD. I will work hard, rest, and repeat - until I am ready to take on the challenge. In November 2013 - I WILL become an Ironman. (No, they don't do gender-specific... EVERYONE becomes an Iron"man".)

My first step - Oklahoma City - September 22nd - the Redman Triathlon event (exactly 10 weeks from today!). I will be doing the 1/2 iron Aqua/bike event. 1.2 mile swim and 56 mile bike ride. Today, with 10 weeks to go, I was barely able to do 5 laps in the pool (less than .25 of a mile) due to my torn rotator cuff. I could only do 4 miles on the bike outdoors. the tiniest fraction of what I must do in 10 short weeks. Every moment of my time, every drop of my energy, must be focused on my goals.

I CAN. I WILL. Don't believe me? Watch me...

My Program:
Strength training two days per week to keep my fitness on-track - spin class 2 times per week, run 2 times per week, outdoor ride 1 time per week, swim 2 times per week.

Gluten free - moderate to low carbs - primarily paleo/primal.

Personal Information:
So much I have said here in the past, but for now there's only one thing that I am focused on... I am becoming IRON.

Other Information:
My source of motivation - my closest friends and family created dog-tags for me with motivational words/phrases... I wear them ALL at the same time. The weight and the sound remind me that there are many people who love me and encourage me and want to see me succeed.

May the wind always be at your back.

Have a Merry Christmas

The Joy of Giving
~John Greenleaf Whittier
Somehow, not only for Christmas,
But all the long year through,
The joy that you give to others
Is the joy that comes back to you;
And the more you spend in blessing
The poor and lonely and sad,
The more of your heart's possessing
Returns to make you glad.
