IT'S THE FINAL COUNTDOWN

NEWS:

WHOA! I never thought I'd make it this far! I am less than 20lbs away from ONEderland (that's when the first digit of my weight is a 1!) and my size 16 jeans are starting to get a little loose in certain areas - even after I accidentally dried a pair of them. They shrank and STILL fit me! haha. Super excited.

My weight loss has slowed down considerably, though. I went from losing about 2 pounds a week, to losing 1 or 2 pounds a MONTH. These last 20 pounds are going to take FOREVER!

On the other hand, I'm still losing inches. I measured myself today and it looks like I've lost 1.5 inches on my waist and the same on my upper arms. My thighs are still the same at their widest point, but I'll keep working on 'em!

As long as I'm making some kind of progress I'm happy. I want to get down to at least a size 14 pants. I'm TOTALLY gonna get there! Maybe by June? That'd be so awesome.

---------

PROGRESS MARKERS:

1) I'm 3 pants sizes smaller
2) My legs are starting to show muscle tone
3) I have improved cardio health
4) I haven't thrown my back out in almost 3 years
5) I feel more positive about my appearance
6) I have more energy every day
7) I'm 1.5'' smaller around the waist & upper arms

-------------------------------------

My ultimate goal is to get fit and prepared to start a family. I don't want to start out heavy, then gain 30+ pounds due to pregnancy. It'll be that much harder to get the weight off after, and I'm going to need the energy to keep up with the demands of an infant!

---------------------------------------

ABOUT ME:

I discovered I'm gluten intolerant, and THAT is why most of the diets I've been trying haven't worked. Switching to whole grain foods was actually worse for me, so now I've been buying gluten free products... The first week I dropped 6lbs just because of that switch!

Eating gluten free also made my knees and hands stop aching, I take fewer allergy pills, my head is less congested.. I sleep better and I have more energy at work too! What a difference!

ABOUT ME:

I started the weight loss journey back in high school. Prior to Freshman year, I had been diagnosed with scoliosis and started treatment. Four years of wearing a solid plastic back brace from 7th - 10th grade discouraged exercise, especially when movement of any kind left sores where the brace rubbed!

I gained weight like crazy, going from about 180 to almost 300 pounds in those 4 short years. When the time finally came to be rid of the brace, I was so disgusted with the way I looked!

Junior year of high school, I decided I'd take control of myself and get a lot of that weight OFF, and I managed to lose roughly 80 pounds by Senior Year - fall of 2002! I can remember showing up to band class, seeing all of my friends again - some for the first time since summer - and seeing the shock on their faces!

It was addictive, I think. I wanted people to look at me and say, "Wow! You look so great!" So I enrolled in a weight training class that year and continued to improve. I may not have been losing weight, but I was losing inches!

Then, disaster struck. I was injured at my first job after high school. A foot injury that made wearing shoes, bending toes and especially walking SO painful. I could hardly go from my bedroom to the bathroom (a distance of maybe 10 feet) without the help of a person or crutches.

At first, I tried to keep up with my workout routine by doing small things that didn't cause me pain: crunches and upper body workouts. I tried to stick to a healthy diet, but as time wore on (the podiatrist said that cartilage is the slowest-healing tissue in the body) I became depressed. Would I ever walk without assistance? Could I ever do the aerobic exercises I loved most, like jumping rope and jogging?

Three years later, with very little improvement in my foot, I had gained about 20 - 25 pounds and things weren't looking too good for me. I had hit rock bottom. Food became a coping mechanism. My social activities were centered around eating. Family gatherings, dates with boyfriends, etc. were all about food. And when I was bored at home (because let's face it, it's SUPER easy to get bored when you can't walk!) I'd snack on stuff.

I tried low carb diets, I tried reducing calories, I tried exercise and drinking extra water and taking vitamins and all sorts of things, and nothing seemed to be working.

Then I did some reading about gluten sensitivity and the symptoms and side-effects. I decided to try one week of gluten-free eating -- BAM! Weight came off so easily, and I felt SO much better!

I now eat six times a day - 5 small snack-sized meals and then a healthy dinner - and keep my calories low enough to burn about two pounds a week, and most of what I eat is gluten free. The differences are AMAZING.
