You've heard the old addage; an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. That is what helped me get started on this journey of losing weight. I believe being active and eating in a healthy manner are a better investment than concentrating on treatment. Instead of getting diabetes and then losing weight, I have lost weight first. My mother has diabetes, so my chances of having it was high. Senator Tom Harkin from Iowa says, "We've got to change the mindset from treating sick people to preventing illnesses in the first place".

And Ben Franklin said "it is easier to prevent bad habits than to break them".

I have made it through the winter without gaining a lot of weight. :) Boy does that feel good. I'm determined to lose another 20 pounds and then I'll be where I want to be. Here goes!

My Goals:
I would like to lose about 20 pounds.

My Program:
I have totally changed my eating habits.
Instead of:
milk = soymilk
plain chips=baked chips
white bread=whole wheat bread
white rice=brown rice
bowls of ice cream=individual portions of ice cream

I've added much more fruit and vegetables to my menu.
I've made changes in recipes. For example I made an apple cake using whole wheat flour, sugar substitute, egg beaters, applesauce and soymilk.
I've added flax to my cereal each day, also blueberries.
I drink a lot of water each day and cut out the pop. My cereal is a whole grain one, Cheerios usually. I eat more chicken and 93% lean ground beef. I use a smaller plate for meals and fill the plate with 3/4 vegetables and little meat. I don't eat many potatoes, but use squash as my starch.


Personal Information:
I am married and live in NW Iowa. I have three children and I know when they were small I put all my energy into raising them. I didn't put so much into taking care of me. Now I realize that I need to take care of ME. I'm not getting any younger and why wait until I have a health issue to get healthy. So I'm taking care of me now.

Other Information:
I am now a retired teacher. Boy does that sound strange! After 33 years I have called it quits with full time teaching. I work in a book store during the summer. I will also be substitute teaching in area schools. So I will be busy.

You have to scroll down the start page and click on "quick tracking" and it will bring up the teams with the flags to give points. Took me a bit to figure it out too.
