Gwen's Spark Page

This page, like me, a work in progress. I am making changes that I hope make both better as time goes on.

I am a Sparkpeople member because my doctor ordered me to lose 50 pounds and my health coach sent me to this site. So far it is helping. I dropped five pounds in the first ten days.

I am a Sparkpeople member because my doctor ordered me to lose 50 pounds and my health coach sent me to this site. So far it is helping. I dropped five pounds in the first ten days.

For me, exercise is the hardest part. I have a lot of health problems that limit the type of exercise I can participate in. It is nearly six when I leave the office. I am usually hungry, tired, and badly in need of some quiet time.

Walking and swimming are the two things my doctors have advised me to do. This time of year is a little easier because we have a great walking place only a short distance from the office and the university pool is available to use after work.

Update: Now that we have been Sparking for six months, we've added to our exercises by purchasing a stationary bike, taking up dancing again, and adding some low-impact aerobic work to our exercise efforts. I still have trouble keeping my calories in range and am losing slower than my spouse, but the program has made a real difference in the activities we are able to enjoy.

Update: A year into Sparking my spouse has lost well over 50 pounds while I am still struggling to reach that first 50 pound goal. Keeping my calories in range continues to be difficult for me, but overall we are more fit.

We have added hiking to our activities and even rented bikes while on vacation. We also decided to take advantage of the fitness center on campus so we could keep up our workouts during the winter. Our Spark is in no danger of going out, but it still takes tracking to keep me focused on my goal.

My Goals:
My first goal is to go down a size this summer.

My big goal is to lose the 50 pounds my doctor wants me to lose this year.

My Program:
My wife and I are tracking food, weight loss, and exercise right now. We may try other things later.

The big thing is to keep this simple. Our lives are complicated enough.

Personal Information:
I am from Grayson, KY, a little town near the Eastern edge of the state. I moved to Lexington in 1991 and still live here. It is a lovely mid-sized city in the heart of horse country. I love it here, though I will probably retire to Tarpon Springs, FL, where my wife's parents live.
