I'm back at it on Spark People! I graduated college in May and started a new job in a new city in June. It has been a whirlwind, but I have actually lost over 15 pounds (using Spark) since graduating! I think the major difference has been being able to cook for myself, walking a lot as part of my daily commute, and not drinking nearly as much. As sad as I am to not be returning to school and seeing my friends this fall, I love that I am able to continue my weight loss journey. Typically I would start on SP in the summer, but give it up once school started again, going back to dining hall food and college drinking. I'm excited to be starting a new period in my life, and I am making a healthy lifestyle a priority!
My eating and portion control has really come a long way in a few short months. I am finally (finallyyyy) getting rid of the "oh I ate one cookie now I'll just throw the day away" mentality. I'm realizing that treats absolutely have a place in my diet, in healthy moderation. The same goes for alcohol--a glass of wine does not mean I can or should play drinking games for the rest of the night! I'm trying to cut back on my dairy products, mostly because my body reacts poorly to cow's dairy (I think I am somewhat lactose intolerant)--but I love cheese! I have found that greek yogurt is much less harsh on my stomach for whatever reason. I'm still definitely a vegetarian, and I don't see that changing any time soon. I want to look into using less soy-based products to get my protein. All in all, my food outlook has become much healthier. I am focused less now on the "nonfat, sugar-free" type products and more on eating whole, unprocessed foods. Healthy fats have a place in my diet!
This summer I did not really focus on fitness, and it shows. I did lose a good amount of weight on the scale, but I didn't see as much change in my body that I would have liked. I decided that I needed to step up my fitness game from my long walks, short runs, and occasional exercise DVDs. I decided to join a gym about three weeks ago--it was a great decision! The gym is ridiculously nice (and reasonably priced!) and so close to my apartment. It is so much easier and enjoyable to do cardio when you can watch TV at the same time! I've been doing high intensity intervals on elliptical machines, incline walking, and the stairmaster. I'm going to start challenging myself to run once a week, starting at a mile and increasing from there. I will never be a serious runner, but I've always wanted to do a 5k. My gym offered an introductory training package when I started, which has been super helpful. I've been doing circuit training for my strength training, and I'm already noticing the difference.
I really need to update my pictures with some current ones! Some of the pictures from around my graduation are kind of shocking--I really had ballooned up. I'll make sure to do that soon!
If we have been "friends" in the past, let's re-connect! I want to get involved again in the SP community.
If you add me as a friend I'll happily add you back--and if I add you, don't be weirded out, it is only because I liked your weight loss ideas/plan and want to refer back to them in the future.
General: focus on eating whole, natural foods; toning up all over; raising my cardiovascular fitness level
Long term weight goal: 120-125 (I'm never going to be a stick!)
Run a 5k!
Food: 3 small meals and 2-3 large snacks every day. I prefer eating every few hours. Healthy fats at meals. Incorporating veggies whenever possible!
3x/week: high intensity cardio intervals or a cardio class
1x/week: easier, longer cardio
1-2x/week: circuit strength training
1x/week: yoga or pilates
Originally from Upstate New York, went to school in Western Mass. (Amherst College), and now living in Washington, DC. Working for a few years and then planning to go back to med school!
For most of my life I have had an athletic build, with extra pounds depending on whether I was in or out of season. I have never (and will never be) "skinny" skinny, but I would like to get back into better shape.
Random interests: music (The Beatles, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Radiohead, Boards of Canada, Blitzen Trapper, etc...), ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, playing frisbee, reading the NY Times, reading in general, celebrity gossip (guilty pleasure), cooking, and health care.

i love love love your favorite music (huge beatles and bela fleck fan!) and i wish you tons of luck with your weight loss goals. i'm going back to college too (rising junior as well) and it's going to be soo hard to stay away from the alcohol. i'm thinking i'll just budget those calories into my weekends and try to drink less. good luck!

Hey! How's everything going with you!? Things are kinda stalled on my end becaue I started a new job this week and I've kinda put my enthusiasm and dedication on hold while I'm adjusting! Plus, when I get stressed I eat more junk (I'm def an emotional eater!!). Anyway, I'm definitely planning on getting back on board next week. I need to bring some healthy snacks to my new work because there's sooo much junk food here! Let me know how it's going : )
