emoticon PAY ATTENTION TO SERVING SIZES emoticon

Looking at the labels on food to see the calorie count, sodium, fat, etc. is a good thing and will help you make smart choices when buying food. But be sure to pay attention to the serving size. Oreo Cookies have only one hundred and sixty calories per serving, but a serving is only three cookies, not six cookies like most people eat. Canned soups, cereals and cooking sprays are all tricky when trying to watch calorie and sodium intake. Coffee creamers are another overlooked source of fat and calories. Some list nutritional information based on a single teaspoon, even though many people have much more. Fat free creamers lead people to think they’re getting 10 calories, when a two-tablespoon serving — a more realistic serving size, would add 50 calories. Be sure to look at serving size on food labels.

☆* ☆ GO GREEN ☆* ☆

Spring and summer are great times to Go Green! Choosing to eat green vegetables and fruit on a daily basis is a fantastic idea. Whether it is asparagus, lettuce, spinach or artichokes, green produce is a wonderful choice full of essential nutrients. Green beans, broccoli, edamame and avocados are delicious and very nutritious. Cucumbers, peas and peppers contain lutein which helps protect against cataracts and macular degeneration. Green fruits like grapes and kiwi not only taste delicious, they are full of antioxidants. Leafy greens are also excellent sources of folate, a B vitamin that helps reduce risk of birth defects and helps keep our hearts healthy. So next time you are grocery shopping, choose fresh, green vegetables and fruit and Go Green!
