Healthier Ken

My page title is also my goal--surprise, surprise! I live in a northern rural area and tend to work out at home, and it's easy to talk myself out of doing a workout. I'm hoping belonging to a group will help me stick on the straight and narrow. I'm married, have 2 children and 3 grandchildren. My wife and I are retired from the public education system and love to escape spring or fall 'mud seasons' in the north by going on cruises in the Caribbean or Mediterranean. Life is good!

My Goals:
To keep my weight between 145 and 150 and to tighten up my muscle tone. I like being able to see my toes without having to look in the mirror : )

My Program:
Had a very successful bout with P90X early in 2011 but haven't been able to devote 30, 60, or 90 days consistently since. Never was a runner, but from January through April of 2012 I learned running the Jeff Galloway way with the intention of running a 10k event. This in response to a challenge from my sister to join her in the Vancouver Sun Run. Did the 10k no problem, then did 12k in a relay on Mothers' Day. Turns out I really like running so I guess that's my fitness program for the foreseeable future.

Personal Information:
My wife and I live on a beautiful property on the lake at 54.5 north latitude in central British Columbia, Canada. Nearest neighbour about half a mile away, nearest community about a 15 minutes' drive. Do I like solitude? You bet! I also like personal fitness activities, quiet times, outdoor work/play, politics, religion and community service. I enjoy live theatre. I avoid TV, the commercial entertainment industry and other mass media except CBC radio and the internet.

Other Information:
I'm a former Teacher/Librarian but you'd never know that by my current reading practices : ( It just took me almost six months to read "Shanataram". Excellent book, gripping story. It wasn't a difficult read, just had too much graphic violence for quick consumption. I think my summer read will be the full Harry Potter series (for the fourth time : )

Judging by people's reactions, I must look like a real grump when it comes to happiness. I just have a criticism of how all of the happiness researchers are coming from the same, basic ideas. I think happiness is more complex than that. Thanks again, Glenn

Thanks for your comment on my blog about my dad. Diet is a key concern, as he has told my brother and I on more than one occasion that he does not like to cook for 1, which makes me think except for a day or two per week, he is not eating too well.

My brother is working the doctor angle. I'm just hoping that we can come to an understanding without lots of arguing. Not all that good at dealing with family confrontations -- sadly, it usually takes backing me into a corner before I start taking action -- so here's hoping my dad realizes that the retirement home option is the best one for him.

And the one he and I like is NICE!! Great food, happy hour(s) on Friday, etc.

Wait, maybe my wife and I need to look into that! emoticon
