2014- Year Of The Run!!!

In January 2012, one of my students ran a half marathon in Disney World. She trained hard and couldn't stop raving about the great time she had. She said the most inspirational part of the race was seeing those who raced for a cause.

In January 2012, one of my students ran a half marathon in Disney World. She trained hard and couldn't stop raving about the great time she had. She said the most inspirational part of the race was seeing those who raced for a cause.

Fran sparked me to dream beyond my wildest imagination. I trained for the better part of 11 months and completed Disney's Wine and Dine Half Marathon in 2012 with a time of 3 hours, 2 minutes, and 48 seconds. My running partner, Melissa, my boyfriend- Rob, and I enlisted the help of many and raised over $2,400 for the American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA) in memory of my friend Billy. We called ourselves Team Carpe Diem after Billy's philosophy. We certainly seized the day!

That race made me realize that I could do anything I set my mind to. I had never been in better shape and felt like I had a new lease on life. Finally, I had won the war on my body by simply accepting it.

After taking the better part of a year off from running, I decided it was time to get back into the swing of things. I ran my first race since the half marathon in September 2013. I finished 9th in my age bracket in the Do It Duo For Pets 5K that was sponsored by PetSmart. I'm scheduled to run 3 more 5k's by the time we get to Thanksgiving 2013- the Oh Far 5K through the Unionville Vineyards on October 12, the American Brain Tumor Association 5K in New York City along Pier 54 on November 9, and the CEA Turkey Trot through Main Street.

I checked the ABTA website and saw that they were sponsoring several races in 2014. I clicked to see if there was anything win which I could participate.

I not only got an itinerary for 2014, but I got INSPIRED!

Melissa, my running partner, lives in Georgia. Together, we're looking to run the Publix Georgia 2014 Half Marathon on March 23.

Less than 8 weeks later, I'll be running the Wildwood Half Marathon in Wildwood, NJ, on May 18. My running parner might be the mother of one of my students. Running a half marathon is on her 'bucket list.'

The real training begins in June.

To backtrack just a bit, I lost a very dear friend to brain cancer in January 2006. Billy was just 21 years old and was, quite simply, the best person I've ever met. He didn't deserve the hand he was dealt and he never complained. His bravery still astounds me. Since his passing, I've taken Billy's philosophy of Carpe Diem to heart. I try to seize each and every day.

Billy's birthday is October 12. On what would have been Billy's 30th birthday in 2014, there is a full marathon being run in Billy's home town of Chicago. It's being sponsored, in part, by ABTA. I can't think of a better tribute to my friend than to push my own limits and run the Chicago Marathon.

Part of my goal is to gather at least 30 members for Team Carpe Diem. Team members don't necessarily have to run. TCD team members can do a variety of things, such as help to raise funds for ABTA, or volunteer during the race, or even be present at the finish line. I'd love to have 30 people at the finish line in TCD shirts. A balloon release would be the icing on the cake. 30 balloons for 30 years. Priceless.

My Program:
I'm using Hal Higdon's 12 week half marathon novice 1 program. I'll be running it twice. The second time through will get me to the start line in Atlanta.

After a 2 week hiatus from running, I'll be running the last 5 weeks of the program to get to the Super Hero Half.

I have not yet decided on a training program for the Chicago marathon. I'm open to suggestions and will be starting to train no later than July 20.

My half went great. It was unusually hot 71 F start temp and we had to traverse a steep bridge twice, tall freighter ships fit under it so it is high. Still managed a 10:39 pace. Was hoping for 10:00 but wasn't to be. My best previos half was 10:20 pace but that was on a cooler day on an easier course. Still shooting for 10:20 pace marathon. The marathon course is flat and it should be cooler so it should be doable. Thanks for asking.

Thanks for the friend add! I loved reading your bio. Very inspirational! I also ran my 1st half this fall and will be running two half-marathons next year with, God willing, a full marathon next fall. So we can train together!!

I was never a baker until I got married and my hubby loved his sweets. Now I love learning how to make "healthier" desserts--muffins, cookies, cakes, etc. My favorites are No-Sugar Added Banana Nut Muffins and Pineapple Angel Food Cake. (Still have to regulate portions, but it is much better for you.) :)

Anyway, looking forward to cheering you on!!
