December 2010. Getting the mojo back!
I am a single mother with sole physical custody of 2 beautiful young kids. A couple years of caring for them and dealing with an alcoholic spouse meant that I was far down on my own list of priorities. (Plus, as a kicker, I developed hypothyroidism after my 2nd child's birth!) Now that the divorce is final and my kids are in a good place emotionally, I am motivated to spend some time on myself. I basically want my outsides to match my insides! I am very upbeat and generally a happy person, but I don't look how I feel.
Since I don't have much free time, I have to break down my goals in order to focus. So first I worked on my lipid numbers -- cholesterol, triglycerides. I've gotten those down to healthy levels through dietary changes and fish oil tablets. (I'd still like to see a bit of an increase in the HDL, however.) Now it's time to attack "the gut"!!
It generally takes me a while to get motivated, but once I do, I'm committed, and generally a force to be reckoned with! After the first 3 weeks my weight loss slowed, probably because I've been hitting it HARD with the workouts and am adding muscle, so I've decided to only weigh myself and take measurements every month instead of weighing once a week. I know I'm getting smaller, my pants tell me so! It feels good to finally have some control over a small corner of my life.
My daughter (7) is very encouraging, however I think my son (3) is afraid I'll change. He keeps telling me, "but Mommy, I like you fat!" ;-)
I have a cute size 10 dress hanging in my closet, where I can see it every morning, for motivation. Can't wait to get back into it!
To make this the last time I have more than 10 pounds to lose.

Modified ADA diet per nutritionist
Lots of seasonal fruits and vegetables, and lean protein
Avoid added sugars & fats
Short, VERY intense workouts 3x week, walking/recovery workout other nights
Take one night a week to relax, read or watch TV, and go to bed early. Plan ahead so I can get a walk in during my lunch break.
I'm 45. But feel about 27!
I live in Richmond VA but hail from Baltimore MD
I watch very little TV, but always catch Glee. For everything else I rely on hulu.com!
I am generally very upbeat even when things are tough. The one thing we can count on is CHANGE!

Just checking in after being out there on my own for months! Not a good idea in the weight loss world! I've been on a eat whatever I want and never exercise binge! The close of this year is bringing renewed interest in myself though!
Sorry to hear of your break up, glad to hear you've moved on! Sounds like you're better off without him! Wishing you a happy new year and much success!
