I am a 30-year old living here in Pittsburgh, PA. It's a great city... if you grew up here... if you like sports... and if you like to drink. Which I don't.
It's also a great city if you're just getting started in photography, if you enjoy going to the Aviary and botanical gardens, if you like "just being out-and-about." That's me.
So, I'm pretty conflicted about Pittsburgh... and city-life in general, but I love my job. How many people can say that?
All this aside, I'd like to share my story. I was overweight most of my life. At the age of 24, I was put on blood pressure pills... Around that time, my mother was diagnosed with diabetes. My doctor pleaded for me to do something... anything... I'm forever grateful to him. My mother showed me how to do it... she lost 60lbs and got off her diabetes meds. She is just an amazing woman! I was desperate to learn about weight loss -- to educate myself. I contacted a dietician through the phone number on the back of my insurance card. I got lots of information on the DASH diet, a high-flber/lean-protein diet recommended for reducing high blood pressure.
In two years, i lost 150lbs. I got off my blood pressure medication, cut down my acid reflux meds, and cut down on my asthma meds. I felt great... strong, healthy, energetic.
On February 14, 2005, my parents had a housefire. The whole house was gone, and I spent months working on lists for the insurance company to help my parents get money to rebuild. Dad designed the new house, and they moved in by October 2005. It was a tough year, but I kept on losing weight... I had to.
At the end of 2005, I found my current job. In 2005 after my parents housefire, I also started attending church. My parents' pastor is amazing... their church helped heal some old "wounds" that I had from years of attending an unwelcoming church.
In 2006, I broke up with my boyfriend of 10 years. I got my first apartment, and started living alone for the first time in my life. I realized that while I was with him, my social life had disappeared. I began struggling with binge-eating, something I'm still fighting.
In the beginning of 2007, I had surgery to remove a pituitary cyst. I had a fantastic doctor and am fully recovered!
Later in 2007, I had gained back 50lbs of what I'd lost. I was sore and tired, but not giving up. Finally, a doctor put me on meds for osteoarthritis and I finally felt like I could exercise again, and I had a break in my struggle with binge-eating... I apparently had been hurting more than I realized.
We had a car accident on Christmas day of 2007. My parents and I weren't injured, but I was checked out by my mother's doctor who thinks I have fibromyalgia and a herniated disc. At home, in Pittsburgh, I changed doctors - I'd been complaining of fatigue but doctors wanted to put me on anti-depressants. I tried to tell them that I needed help with sleep, not my mood... and I felt such relief when my mother's doctor said all I might need is sleep medication and I'd feel much better. Finally -- someone who listened!
Update: I DO have fibromyalgia. I'm being treated successfully with pain meds, muscle relaxants and sleep meds. I pace myself and try to get the rest my body needs. I'm slowly building up my exercise and trying to eat healthier again.
We've got to take care of ourselves, because we hope to have a long life in these bodies that we were given. We have to keep our bodies moving and not be hard on ourselves for our efforts, our struggles, our physical limitations. Be kind to yourself!
I desperately need to be healthy. I want to keep my blood pressure low. I want to avoid diabetes. I want to be able to stay active and keep my legs strong for as long as I can in my life. I want to be an ACTIVE person. And I want to enjoy doing it all!
It's all about high-fiber and lean protein. And fun stuff like strawberries, kiwi fruit, apples and tasty stuff!

Here are my RULES:
1. No computer between 6:30-7:30 on weekdays. I will do housework or exercise/do physical therapy.
2. Drink tea and water when I get home from work so I don't binge.
3. I WILL journal my food.
4. I will try to learn to experiment with recipes and cooking.
5. I will set mini-goals and celebrate when I reach my mini-goals. (even if it's just allowing myself to reflect on/feel good about what I've accomplished!)
6. BE KIND TO MYSELF. I will actively seek things that make me happy and when something makes me unhappy, I'm going to try to change it. Self-criticism is damaging and I will tell myself to stop when I start criticising myself.
I'm originally from Johnstown, PA. I attended Ferndale High school there and then attended Elizabethtown College in Lancaster. Now I live in Pittsburgh, PA.

your DDDY ibc challenge reminded me of something Glory does ~ she took the things we wrote on cards for Beck (advantages to losing, response cards to sabotaging thoughts, new skills & techniques like give yourself credit which is my personal absolute favorite!!!)
and she put these into the SparkCalendar system to send her (us, me & Alison) reminders of the tidbits...
if you go to her SparkPage, she also has a bunch of them she had typed up already so that she can just copy/paste them into the SparkCalendar for reminders... and she used those also to gussy up for her actual cards she created (in pretty fonts & colors with pics etc) ~ she is so creative ;)
anyway, i found the exercises/making the cards and things to be thought provoking and helpful with my thinking ~ and repitition like she suggests has helped focus on the positive, can do feeling too. It's been very empowering :)
