Back to Basics

In 2005 I worked as a personal trainer for the Shapes gyms in Florida. At the same time I was learning to belly dance, perform, and teach. High fitness and energy levels made keeping trim easy. When I retired from dancing in February 2009 I also pulled away from working out. I didn't like the sales aspect of personal training. My weight steadily increased from 138lbs to the 150lb range. Then to 160. 170. 180 flew by and all of sudden I weighed 195 pounds. In May 2010 found SparkPeople and even read The Spark. Still, I wasn't mentally ready to work off the pounds. I gained more weight and hit my max weight: 204. Wow. I was stunned. I made the decision to love my body and give it what it needs: healthful foods, fresh water, cardio, and strength training. I signed up for my company's corporate wellness program at my local gym and trained with a trainer. 30-60 minutes later (and during!) I was so happy! It felt like a caffeine rush or a manic attack, but I have a feeling it was the endorphin rush from the exercise!

I like to read on my Kindle 3. No paper, please. It feels funny to me.

I hate to go to bed early.

Month After Christmas Diet Poem

'Twas the month after Christmas,
and all through the house
Nothing would fit me, not even a blouse.
The cookies I'd nibbled, the eggnog I'd taste at the holiday parties had gone to my waist.

When I got on the scales
there arose such a number!
When I walked to the store
(less a walk than a lumber).
I'd remember the marvelous meals I'd prepared;

The gravies and sauces and beef nicely rared,
The wine and the rum balls, the bread and the cheese
And the way I'd never said, "No thank you, please."
As I dressed myself in my husband's old shirt
And prepared once again to do battle with dirt---
I said to myself, as only I can
" You can't spend a winter disguised as a man! "

So--away with the last of the sour cream dip,
Get rid of the fruit cake, every cracker and chips

Every last bit of food that I like must be banished
" Till all the additional ounces have vanished.
I won't have a cookie--not even a lick.
I'll want to chew only on a long celery stick.

I'll munch on a carrot and quietly cry.
I'm hungry, I'm lonesome, and life is a bore---
