Still going...

I swear I've been a sparkpeople member for over ten years, and still stuck in the same spot. I think it's partly because I live overseas and have no access to regular food or a decent gym, but I know those are only excuses. I have equipment at home, I have hills/mountains to walk, and I also have a new husband to cook and clean for and spend time with. I need to balance these things out.

My whole adult life I've always hovered around 135 pounds. However, about ten years ago, I became an international teacher (currently in a small town in the mountains of Papua, Indonesia) and found that lack of gyms and nutritional content labels on food, as well as boredom and loneliness, have made my weight skyrocket to 174 pounds. I actually had a tummy tuck and liposuction in 2006 when I was around 160 pounds. I was dismayed when my weight just kept going up and up!

Anyway, I'm back to around 165 pounds now. I'm finding Spark to be a great help. Now that I have learned to buy only foods whose calories I can meticulously count, and figured out how to enter them into my food diary, I feel really confident! I have already lost at least six pounds since starting! I write everything into my food diary as soon as (or while) I am eating it. Turning off the TV and cranking the tunes while I'm exercising also really helps.

My first real breakthrough was giving up on the trying to lose 10 or 20 pounds in an unrealistic amount of time. I am now determined to aim for two pounds a week. That keeps me from getting discouraged. Also, every time I put something in my mouth, I have to ask myself if that food is going to help or hinder reaching that two pound goal each week. I also wrote in my goal weight for each Sunday until Christmas on my calendar. That gives me a great visual. I'm going home to Wisconsin for Christmas, and I don't want to listen to people tell me how fat I've gotten again!

My main challenge is finding the energy in the afternoon to do an hour on my elliptical trainer, and then do at least thirty minutes of strength training. Sometimes it's easy, but mostly I have a hard time talking myself into doing it. I try to make up for it on weekends. I'm also trying to add 10 or 15 minutes of cardio at 5:00a.m. Wish me luck!

My Goals:
I want to feel healthy and not feel ashamed of my body. I want to have control over what I eat and be able to eat healthy without feeling deprived. I want to feel strong and flexible and live a long, healthy life. The question is, can I do it?

My Program:
I am being diligent about recording hopefully every calorie that enters my mouth. I am trying to do a minimum of 45 minutes cardio every day - though I am only up to about 4 or 5 times per week right now. I try to work out extra on the weekends. I also do strength training three times a week, mostly with free weights or my body weight.

Personal Information:
I am originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I have lived in Egypt, Venezuela, and the Republic of Georgia. I am currently in the Andes in Northern Peru.

...I'm back in Chicago. Looks like I'm not going anywhere for the foreseeable future. Major bummer!

Oh well, good to be back with family and friends. Where are you?

Let's not quit on this thing again! I have gained a ton of weight since returning to the States!

Thanks so much for the GOODIE! I need to learn how to do that! Hope your cold is getting better. Most of the time, I am very independent. But when I'm sick, "I want my Mommy!!!" Get well soon...

Hi! I have such a similar weight history... and now I'm living in Uruguay, South America! So at least we are on the same continent.
