I didn't become active until my early 30s. After my dad passed from smoking-related cancer in the mid 1980s, I quit smoking and started swimming, as I always loved the water. That activity led me to underwater hockey, which I have played since 1991. I compete in local, regional, and national tournaments, and have even been to one world competition.

I also liked running, and I ran track in high school, but I injured my knee in a long jump. After that I had pain when I ran so thought I would never be a runner. I met a woman (now a friend) who told me I was probably not in the right shoes. I got fitted and was happy to discover that I COULD run pain free, and in fact the running has strengthened me knee. So, at the age of 46 I started running, and as of mid-2014, I have done 2 marathons, 13 half marathons, and countless 10Ks and 5Ks. I have also done a few triathlons, and my next goal is to complete a 70.3, as well as PR a marathon before the end of 2015.

If I could send a message to people it would be that you are never too old to change your lifestyle, and to not expect huge changes in a short amount of time. It is a constant work in progress with backslides and progressions.

Aw, happy birthday to your mom! My mama is 87, will be 88 in February. She's always concerned about our health and it tickles her to death when we exercise and eat healthy. Y'all enjoy your Christmas, too!

Thank you for the Spark Goodie and Well Wishes. This bowl of soup looks so yummy. Being sick for almost 3 weeks sure is getting old. I really miss my running. Hopefully this weekend I can get out there for a 6-7 miler. I was hoping to do Half Marathon Nov. 2nd. We shall see.

I will have to try underwater hockey sometime...I love the water! Also, I didn't even think of those headbands that cover the ears. I need to get some of those soon. Thanks for all of the suggestions...I do not want to give myself excuses just because it is getting colder!
