I never believed I would go through knee replacement surgery even though my knees have been "bad" since I was in my 30's. I have arthritis on both sides of my family so I think I inherited the arthritis gene. The pain in my knees continued to increase and I found myself not doing things that would increase the pain. In 2008 I injured my knee and had x-rays that showed bone on bone deterioration and surgery was recommended. I was very fearful of surgery and elected to try exercise and a healthy diet to control the pain. I joined the Y and went to the pool to exercise, walked every day and lost about 5 pounds. I still had pain and found it very difficult to continue my exercise program even in the pool. In May of 2010, my denial ran out. My right kneecap fractured giving me the worst pain I ever had. My options were surgery or the wheel chair. I elected surgery and had R. total knee replacement on June 30, 2010. I prepared for surgery with the help of the SP Knee and Hip Replacement Team and had an amazing recovery. I had very little pain and returned to work six weeks after my surgery. Then I ran into my next problem. In trying to exercise to continue rehabilitation on my new knee, my left knee did not cooperate. I had pain that prevented me from walking and even riding my recumbent bike became impossible. It was time to get my left knee replaced if i wanted to continue to have a quality life. On January 11, 2011 I had my left knee replaced and two and a half weeks later I am recovering. This knee is a little slower and I have more pain and swelling, but I know the end-result is worth it. Rehab has barely begun!!
