I've been Sparking for a few years now and I have had great success with making myself healthy, but going back to school for a PhD while pushing 30 made me flabby again. Now I'm fighting hard to get back down to a healthy weight. I might be down but I'm not out!

I've been Sparking for a few years now and I have had great success with making myself healthy, but going back to school for a PhD while pushing 30 made me flabby again. Now I'm fighting hard to get back down to a healthy weight. I might be down but I'm not out!

I began this journey by idly flipping through "Oh, The Places You'll Go". I realized that I was stuck in The Waiting Place. ("...waiting for a train to go or a bus to come, or a plane to go or the mail to come, or the rain to go or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow or waiting around for a Yes or No or waiting for their hair to grow. Everyone is just waiting.") At the time I was feeling a bit stuck in my job and my weight was creeping up courtesy of Messrs. Ben and Jerry. I decided then that I needed to kick myself into gear. No more waiting; I wanted to "find the bright places where Boom Bands are playing"!

Since then I've hiked a few hikes, taken up running, discovered the wonderful world of paleo eating, rediscovered the joys of juggling, danced like no one's watching, picked things up and put them down, and have (occasionally) been content with just being myself.

I have learned oodles about health and wellness and now I am working to get back down to my goal weight of 135 pounds. It's not easy to balance the persistent stress of a PhD program with being healthy but I am determined to make it work!

My Goals:
-Get down to a heart-healthy 125 lbs
-Run 1 mile without walking
-Complete a 5k
-End emotional overeating (Work in constant progress...)
-Get back into the dating scene (Check - and I found a really great guy to date!)
-Wear an itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini (bikini purchased...waiting for my body to catch up!)

My Program:
-Keep it primal - grass fed meat, fish, veggies, fruit, and some dairy. Mmm mmm good!
-Log on to SP daily
-10,000 steps a day
-Cardio 2-3x/week (running or swimming)
-Strength training 2-3x/week
-Daily stretching
-Sleep
-Have fun!

Personal Information:
I love to geek out, hang out with friends, do outdoorsy stuff, read/watch sci-fi, escapist fiction, poetry, chick flicks, old movies, and musicals, and I love molecular microbiology, space, libertarianism, photography, juggling, ice skating, hiking, camping, and being cheeky.

Since I joined SP I'm fighting idleness, getting healthier, working on my moxie, and you might say I'm developing something that looks a lot like gumption. Healthy feels so good!

Well, I am only going for my master's right now, of course.

If you have any spare time (HA) I would really love to hear about your experience getting your master's.

I don't have any friends or know anyone really well who has gotten their master's (in science, anyway... my best friend has a master's in photography, which really isn't anywhere in the same ballpark)

I name all my balls and weights. :) How are things going for you?

I have my recommendations all lined up and started my application... have to dig through boxes and find some official transcripts and take my GRE again on the 24th.
