"There is no failure except in no longer trying."

I've been Sparking for a few years now and I have had some great success with figuring out how to make myself healthy, but going back to school for a PhD while pushing 30 made me flabby again. Now I'm fighting hard to get back down to a healthy weight. I might be down but I'm not out!

I began this journey by idly flipping through "Oh, The Places You'll Go". I realized that I was stuck in The Waiting Place. ("...waiting ...

I began this journey by idly flipping through "Oh, The Places You'll Go". I realized that I was stuck in The Waiting Place. ("...waiting for a train to go or a bus to come, or a plane to go or the mail to come, or the rain to go or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow or waiting around for a Yes or No or waiting for their hair to grow. Everyone is just waiting.") At the time I was feeling a bit stuck in my job and my weight was creeping up courtesy of Messrs. Ben and Jerry. I decided then that I needed to kick myself into gear. No more waiting; I wanted to "find the bright places where Boom Bands are playing"!

Since then I've hiked a few hikes, taken up running, discovered the wonderful world of paleo eating, rediscovered the joys of juggling, danced like no one's watching, picked things up and put them down, and have (occasionally) been content with just being myself.

I have learned oodles about health and wellness and now I am working to get back down to my goal weight of 130 pounds. It's not easy to balance the persistent stress of a PhD program with being healthy but I am determined to make it work!

My Goals:
-Get down to a heart-healthy 130 lbs
-Run 1 mile without walking
-Complete a 5k
-End emotional overeating
-Wear an itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini (bikini purchased...waiting for my body to catch up!)

My Program:
-Keep it paleo-ish - veggies, unprocessed meat, fish, fruit, and some seeds, nuts, and dairy.
-Log on to SP daily
-10,000 steps a day
-Daily stretching
-Strength training 3-4x/week
-Intense cardio 1x/week (running, swimming, or hiking)
-Sleep 7+ hours each night
-Blog/journal every day
-Have fun!

Personal Information:
I love to geek out, hang out with friends, do outdoorsy things, and read/watch various forms of escapist fiction. I'm halfway through a PhD program studying molecular microbiology and geology, and some of my favorite things are hiking, camping, reading, photography, juggling, ice skating, board- and video- games, self-sufficiency, my boyfriend (aww), my family, my cat, and being cheeky!

To me, Sparking is a way to fight idleness, get healthier, work on my moxie, and develop something that looks a lot like gumption.

Healthy feels so good!

Hey thanks for coming by! C25K is going okay. Since I am unemployed now, I have more time to work on my running. I have never been good at running and I thought, what better time than now? I am in week 3 which is the furthest I have ever gotten, LOL. I think I may have to repeat some weeks though, because I just don't seem to progress at running like other people do. But I am enjoying it! I LIKE running, I am just not GOOD at it. I will keep you updated! Hope you are doing well and feeling okay these days!
