Mary's New Beginning

Monday of this week (12/03/07) I put on one of my favorite dresses to get ready for work - a great mid-calf length denim thing with buttons all the way down the front. I stepped up to the mirror to do my hair and realized I looked like a sausage stuffed into a sock. I desperately need to lose 100 pounds - not just to improve my declining appearance, but for my health as well. I'm pre-diabetic and have moderately high blood pressure that is barely under control. My mom died of heart related issues - the last of which was a stroke. If I don't get a grip on this I could, too.

My Goals:
Lose 100 pounds, and keep it off!! The primary goal is to improve my health.
1) Lower my blood pressure.
2) Stop my pre-diabetes from going full-blown.
Another goal that nags at the back of my mind constantly is getting fit enough to get back into agility training with my two dogs. Right now, I'm too fat to run! Angie was completely trained and ready to go when I fell and ripped the MCL in both knees (yup). After that I couldn't do exercise walking, let alone the rigorous stop-start-turn of agility. By the time I could I was too lazy to get off my rapidly spreading tush. Agility is wonderful for both the dogs and for me. It's goal driven and requires discipline, patience and physical agility in both the dogs and myself. The dogs LOVE the sport, and it gives a level of dog/owner closeness that often would not occur otherwise. It's a great sport and I really miss it.

My Program:
I'm applying Low-Carb principles to my diet, but right now I'm not married to anything. I've been going through the menu choices day by day a couple weeks in advance to see what it would be like to use the Spark Diet. It does have a lot of my favorite foods, and it would be easy to use. I just want to lose weight. Whatever does it - it's all good.

I've gone low-sodium (harder than quitting smoking) and have cut down (but not eliminated) my intake of caffeine. I love salads, meats, fruits and vegetables. I'm adding flax to my diet daily - both for its health benefits and fiber.

I'll be using my "health flyer" machine for 10 minutes daily and will increase the duration as time goes on.

As soon as spring hits I plan to get the girls back out to the dog park. We were doing a brisk 1 hour walk every day when I fell. Walking took the edge off my stress, lowered my blood pressure and tightened my body. It's God's own exercise program.
