I'm committed to changing my lifestyle,

(10 months in: I'm now also committed to Spark. This is a wonderful aide. There is no doubt in my mind that my life will be extended and its quality greatly improved thanks to SP.)

The longer it takes to lose the weight and improve fitness (as long as progress is steady and continuous), the better. The habits necessary to remain healthy are being honed as I go -- it's a lifestyle approach, not a "crash diet."

(250 days in: I'm staying on course, keeping the faith, holding the line, not giving up the ship, keeping my nose to the grindstone, sticking it out, refusing to surrender and hanging in there. Progress is slow; but that's the plan. I passed the half-way point and think I can see some light at the end of this tunnel I've been in (more of a cave) for much of my life.

It's about food and exercise, but mostly about food. Control what goes into your body and you can't gain weight regardless of how much you move around or don't move around. (Not that I'm promoting a sedentary lifestyle, far from it; but the bitter truth is that most of us became fat because we ate too much, pure and simple.)

It's usually a long, hot summer where I live. But I will be a bit cooler than last year because I've shed a hundred pounds of insulation. That's something to celebrate.

My Goals:
I'm hoping to morph my psychological approach to food into a more healthy "eat to live" or "food as medicine" outlook.
I'm willing to give up the pleasure benefits derived from eating what tastes good in return for the health benefits derived from responsible eating habits.

My Program:
I'm using the SPARK online tools to manage intake -- but my goal is to develop a sense of how much is enough. After a year or two of eating less than needed to facilitate weight loss, I'm hoping to be able to make the transition to eating just what's needed...

Personal Information:
I've moved around quite a bit; I've lived in Colorado, Ohio, Arizona, New Mexico and Michigan.
Now retired, I had two careers: first in community recreation and then in Communications/Journalism (as a teacher, mostly).
I live alone, have one grown child and have been slowly destroying my health for years, particularly since my wife died nine years ago.
But I believe I'm ready to crawl out from under the rock I pulled over my head and to restore my body to health. Then I'm hoping to make the most of new-found energy by grabbing for some gusto (though not in the form of feasting or drinking).
I took a long trip all around North America last year and was so limited in terms of mobility that I hardly saw anything.
I'm hoping to take another long trip in a few years and this time to climb every inviting hill and to experiment with all kinds of physical activities (like boating, horseback riding, etc.)

Other Information:
I'm a writer. I believe writing about my journey from fat to fit will help keep me on track.
