Better Late than Never
I'm a 52 year old female. Never been married, no children. I have been teaching in a small rural school for 29 years. I am planning to retire within 2 years and I want to be at a healthy weight to enjoy all of the things I want to do then. I've been overweight/obese my entire life. I was the fat girl in school and to make matters worse, my name is Patsy. As you've already guessed, I was Fatsy-Patsy throughout childhood. I've used Sparkpeople before, but only to track my food. Like many people, I've tried almost everything to lose weight and was successful every time. However, I was never able to maintain my loss. I have done WW many times in the past and this was probably the healthiest weight loss program I've done. Back when Oprah did the liquid diet, I decided to try that. BIG mistake!!!!!!! I did lose weight, and a lot of muscle, too. After reaching goal and starting to eat solid food again, I was unable to stop. I had never known such hunger. It was as if every cell in my body was crying out to be fed. And feed it I did. I allowed my weight to climb to an astronomical 250 lbs and I'm only 5'2". Two years ago, I went to see a Bariatric Specialist and did a high protein/low carb diet and lost, but was unable to stay on it. In April, I started seeing a naturopath dr. He put me on several supplements to support my nutrition. My brother-in-law started seeing him after having his colon removed and he has done wonderfully. Incredibly, my craving for sweets is almost gone. There is still once or twice a week when I crave them, but before it was a dozen or more times a day. I am also eating as he suggests: Limited amount of red meat, wild salmon, fresh or frozen vegetables/fruits, nothing canned unless it is organic. No simple carbohydrates and only good fats, hormone free milk, etc. He recommends organic everything and I am trying to move in that direction. Since then, I have lost 21 lbs. I finally have energy again and some hope of getting down to a reasonable weight. My overall goal it to be fit and healthy by May 2010. I have a long way to go, but feel this is a realistic goal.
