Hello all! I've been away for quite awhile and I've had MANY changes in my life recently, but I'm back and haven't felt so good in a looooong time! :)

The name's Dorine, but my family calls me Dorinda ;) I'm 27 years old and I currently live in New York, NY while my husband attends graduate school and I apply for Nursing school. I am also a professional make-up artist and liscensed esthetician and I absolutely love it but am going back to school for Nursing because my true passion lies in helping others. I also hold a BS in Exercise Science and Sports Medicine.

So now let's talk about my weight loss journey...

I was always a chubby kid growing up. Any chance I got to the store with my mom I would ask to go for the sole purpose I convincing her to buy me a candy bar haha Sad, but true. My parents never put me into sports growing up, we had a lot going on during the time I was in grade school. When I went to high school I became active in dance and cheerleading. Cheerleading was passion. Although I was one of the heavier girls on my team I was very naturally muscular so I never really appeared fat, just alittle thick. I was captain of my team, on the competition team, and won many awards. I had high hopes of being a college cheerleader. That all changed for me right before college cheer tryouts. For no apparent reason my neck began to hurt like crazy. I didn't know what was going on and by the time tryouts came I could hardly move it. I missed tryouts and that was only the beginning of disappointments for me.

Shortly after I began getting migraines every day. Some days I would even have to ask my boyfriend to drive me home because I was so sick and I had to go to the hospital another time. The migraines were so bad that I couldn't function. I went to the doctor and they put me on medicine which didn't realy help. I was miserable and I really wanted to lose weight, but I always felt sick and didn't know how to start. Basically, I was lazy and ate like crap.

My fiance was in the Marine Corp at the tme and was so tired of hearing me complain about my weight that he challenged me to go running with him one day. He said "you always say you want to lose weight, so do something about it." I went on a run with him and was giving him dirty looks the entire time because I couldn't keep up with him. It was in that moment that I knew I had to do something about my weight and I did.

I began running and I cut out fast food, coffee and soda. My headaches got a little worse at first but then gradually became better. I started running a minimum of 3miles a day and went from 174 lbs to 130 lbs. I felt amazing.

During this time my neck pains had become more chronic. I went to see the doctor and he informed me that I had the neck of a 60 year old woman and asked if I had been in a bad car accident or had suffered other head trauma. When I said no he looked puzzled. I began having my boss, who was a physical therappist, working on my neck to help releive pain. He told me that my neck that was supposed to have a natural curve in it was completely flat which is probably why I was having so much pain. The nerves were being pinched and there was two much pressure on that part of my spine. He suggested I stop running and cut back on my exercise. Being the stubborn gal that i am, I refused. : )

Soon after my doctor questioned me about the alignment of my jaw, I had a class three underbite which is pretty much as bad as it gets. Just picture Bubba Gump and I think you'll understand lol My doctor asked if I ever had pain in my jaw and I said yes. He told me I should consider getting braces to see if the alignment of my jaw had an influence on my neck pain.

About a month later I met with my orthodontist who explained to me that while braces may help my problem, they will not correct my jaw. The placement could only be corrected with surgery. At this point I just wanted to feel good so I asked what I needed to do to have the surgery. My mom hesitated, but I was actually excited. He explained that I would have to have brace on for a year and then I would have the surgery and have my braces removed after. After meeting with him I went to meet with an oral surgeon. He explained the process to me and also informed me that while there was a chance the sugery would not help my neck or jaw pain at all, it would not make it any worse and I would have the aesthetic benefit of a "normal" face and jaw.

I went ahead and had the sugery in April of 07 and got my braces off in Feb of this year, just days before my fiance proposed to me. The surgery was not bad at all and I was never in any pain, but I was VERY swollen and would have looked very much like Shrek had you painted my face green. Before I went into surgery my surgeon as well as members of my family urged me to gain some weight because after surgery most people lose about 20 lbs during recovery due to having only liquids for a few months after. So needless to say I listened to them and gained about twenty pounds. During my surgery I lost the twenty pounds I had gained because of so little food. I could barely eat a tiny cup of jello a day, it was exhausting. Needless to say, once I started eating normally after I was healed I gained all of the weight I lost during surgery back. This was really depressing for me because I hadn't been that heavy or inactive in so long so it was really hard for me. I never really got back to where I was physically was why I initially joined this site, for motivation and to keep myself accountable.

My Goals:
-to run 6 miles without stopping: accomplished July 22, 2011!
-run a 5k in under 35 minutes (accomplished Sept 2011 at Race for a Cure, time was just under 33 minutes!)
-run a 10k
-run a half marathon
-to lose 15 pounds by the end of 2011
-fit into a size 4 comfortably


My Program:
*eating clean foods consisting of mostly vegetables and protein (chick or fish)

-resistance training AT LEAST 3 times a week
-cardio AT LEAST 4 times a week

*Interesting facts: has 12 metal screws and 6 metal hooks in her face courtesy of her jaw surgery last summer, has never drank or done a drug in her life (and proud of it), hasn't touched a soda in 7 years, once played a munchkin in a school play, is a part time nanny, can burp louder than most grown men :)


Other Information:
*movies: I love mob movies!:Anything that can make me laugh out loud is also a good thing. However I am notorious for falling asleep during movies lol
*books: I'm currently reading "If you have to cry go outside and other things your mother never told tou" and "what becomes of the broken hearted" both really incredible
*TV:i sometimes stay up late at night just to watch Golden Girls haha I'm a nerd like that I'm also addicted to reality TV especially the Real Housewives shows, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead
*loves: rainy days and sunny days, the sound of laughter, spending time with my family, quality time with my nephew, my husband, friends and family
*Fave forms of exercise: running, kickboxind, bootcamp, elliptical, and anything that can work my abs and booty ;) I also LOVE to dance and I do it pretty much every chance I get.

Hi there! I just checked my email and saw that you added me. Hope you don't think I'm an as$ for not stopping by sooner to say hello :) Looks like we are the exact same weight with very similar goals!!! My tracker says my goal is 129 but ultimately I'd like to be 125. Slowly but surely I'm making my way there! How are things going so far with you? What's your fitness routine like? Your wedding photos are amazing, what a beautiful bride. I look forward to getting to know you and to seeing more of your progress!!! Have a GREAT Friday woohoo, I'm so excited for the weekend, this has been a CRAZY week!

Hi, I'm Jan. I'm new to SP (4 wks now) and could be your Mom's age (57). I just love the wedding photos and have tagged you friend (now we are "it"!!). I love to keep up with the younger generation too because it helps keep me "young at heart". We all get battle scars along the way, but I prefer to stay focused on today and plan for the future. That includes a healthy, fit lifestyle. I'm so glad I found SP as a "food coach" and you . . . .

Look forward to watching you "bloom"!!
