We have had a few bears a few times. Mostly when I was a kid. The last time that I had seen a bear in camp was about 4 years ago. It was pretty funny. :)
My twin and I were roasting marshmallows for breakfast ( this was before I realized I was heavily over weight.) We were talking about work and friends. Then I heard a loud sniffing and huffing sound. I looked behind me and there was a black bear. A adolescent, but still the bear making its way toward us.
My sister was still talking when I looked at her. She was concentrating to hard on her story and marshmallows. I set down my stick and calmly stood up. "Okay... You need to get up. We need to get into the car." She just rolls her eyes and starts to talk real loudly because I interrupted her story. So I shushed her. "There is a bear..." Then she saw it. I could see her getting ready to scream so I interrupted her train of thought. "Don't scream. Just get up calmly and back away walking backwards."
She just nodded and tried to unlock the car door, but she was just to frightened. "Stay calm and give me the keys." She did give them to me and moved into the car. The bear did enter into the camp. He ate the Marshmallows that we left out, but that was all he did. Later we laughed about how calm I managed to stay. She later felt bad that she was behind me when we were moving to the car, but she was so nervous and scared that she didn't notice that I did it on purpose. either way that was a good story to share with the family and a great bonding experience for us two.
I always thought that I would freak out if I saw a bear in the area, but I remain calm in stressful/ dangerous situations. :)
E darling such a long time. LOL! I am going to go camping at Twins lake in July. My family always leaves the planning and lists of some sorts. SO this year I am starting earlier to try and not miss anything and I even made the list on the compute to save it so I don't have to keep writing the dang thing every year. LOL.
Have you ever been to Twin Lakes? If not I will make sure to take plenty of pictures and show them to you once I get back from there. Its an hour long drive up the mountain, but it is well worth it. :) Plus its a beautiful drive. Well besides there is part of the road that if another car comes I am seriously wanting to jump out and walk up because there is no guard rail. There is only a sudden drop to death. :( It scares the crap out of me. :)
There is plenty of hiking and swimming there. Not to mention there is lots of wildlife. The only thing I am always scared to run into is the bears and mountain lions. No one in my family brings a gun because they don't like them, but I rather have one just in case. Lucky me I have a dad who is not afraid of guns. So when the time comes I will borrow one from daddy. Hopefully he wont make me take the elephant gun. LOL. its rough on the shoulders, but can take down a grizzly in no time. LOL.
