I'm ready

I'm a 41-year old father of three, and I started with SP August 2009 because I needed help getting my weight under control. I reached my goal weight of 155 pounds (a loss of 122 pounds) in late 2010, and am working on maintaining in the 155-160 pound range.

I have the support of my kids and my wonderful wife, L3DESIGNS, who is my inspiration and who started on her SparkPeople journey seven months before I did and is getting ever closer to her goal weight.

When I started I used the stationary bike, then started walking, and then started running. I've completed a 5K, a 10K, and a Half Marathon, and my wife has also run her first. My second Half was the Disney Princess Half at Disneyworld (Florida) in February 2011, however I walked it due to a stress fracture.

If you're new to SP and are just starting out, here are a couple blogs that I wrote with some overview material from what I've done here to date. If they help, great!

Increase my energy level

Enjoy life!

My Program:
The boring stuff: diet & exercise. I track everything.

I started out walking, graduated to running, completed one Half Marathon, walked a second due to injury, then ran my third.

I've started (and stopped) Insanity four times now, but in each case running took over...

Apparently I can be somewhat of a Cardio junkie!

Personal Information:
40, married for 13 years, with one son (10), two daughters (8 & 5). I'm an Electrical Engineer doing IC design, and live in Coquitlam, BC, Canada.

Other Information:
Engineering is the art of optimization, trading off a number of different costs to come up with the best solution. Never forget that your time has a cost.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for your funny comment on my “Nice Weather and Stupid Cast” status. I did not ask the orthopedic tech to attach the cleat. I wanted her to put the mounting plate in place. She was not amused.

Bill,

How is the shoulder healing coming along?

Hi Bill,

Thanks for your comment on my “Walking Cast and New Bike” blog. Although this might come as a surprise, I am actually a reasonably good bike rider. The Nimble 9 is reputed to be a very stable and forgiving bike.

My wife has become very accepting of my mountain biking and road cycling hobby. I work for a terrific healthcare company that is into cycling like other companies are into golf. My sweet wife knows that some of my success at work is because I fit the culture so well.

Little Stumpy is being purchased by my oldest son’s fiancée. When the weather gets good, we can have a family outing on some easy mountain trails. Since my wife views mountain biking as a social event, selling Little Stumpy to our future daughter-in-law is good deal all the way around.

I hope your shoulder recovers soon. I do understand the reason for waiting to finish the saga of Bill’s custom bike until you are whole. I have a stack of stuff I want to share in my blog such as my total rebuild of Little Cam.

I know building my own frame would have been really fun. However, when I found the perfect frame for $750 plus $30 for shipping, I could not resist.

Thanks, Bruce

Hi Bill,

You are pretty clever naming bikes after unique features in Iceland. I tend not to be that inventive naming bikes. I name my bikes on size, color and function, such as Big Red, Little Rocky, White Lightning, Little Cam, Big Orange Beast, Ultra Stumpy and Little Stumpy. The 29” Canfield Nimble 9 will likely to be called “Big Blue”, or maybe “Big Canny”, or possibly “Big Nimby”.

Thanks, Bruce
