Midlife Makeover

I'm a 53-year old divorced mom of three starting over from SAHM/doormat to living for myself. Along the way I packed on the pounds and the guilt and shame that go with them. Even vanity couldn't get me to a smaller dress size.

I'm at my all-time high of 264 lbs on a 5' 4" frame, and I carry most of if in my belly, the worst situation for your heart. In April 2013 I was dx'd with severe sleep apnea, for which I was prescribed a CPAP machine. I'm struggling to get used to it ...

I'm at my all-time high of 264 lbs on a 5' 4" frame, and I carry most of if in my belly, the worst situation for your heart. In April 2013 I was dx'd with severe sleep apnea, for which I was prescribed a CPAP machine. I'm struggling to get used to it and have yet to sleep throught the night with it. I'm borderline diabetic and have edema in my feet and ankels. I already take medication for high cholesterol and high blood pressure. I believe GERD accounts for a persistent dry cough and nasal congestion that has bothered me for years. My grandmothers lived into their mid-90's and I'm worried about making it to my mid-50's.

Time to stop procrastinating. This is my third attempt at setting goals with Sparkpeople. Let's hope the third time really is the charm!

My Goals:
Rather than focusing on a number that I want to weigh, I am aiming for better overall health, better sleep, fitting into my clothes comfortably. I want to wear a belt again someday!

I also participated in a minil-triathlon to raise money for epilepsy research. I only had to walk 20 mins. on a treadmill to complete my part of the team effort, but I had so much fun and enjoyed being part of a competition that I would like to do it again! The post-event gathering for beer and bar food was fun too.

My Program:
I am very diligent about recording every morsel I eat or drink in my nutrition tracker, so I know exactly what I'm taking in and why the scale is not budging! I am also making myself start out slow in the gym and gradually increase the length and intensity of workouts so I don't injure myself or have them need to use the defibrillator on me.

Personal Information:
I live in Fairfield County, Conn. with my youngest daughter, age 16. My two older kids, ages 20and 22, live nearby with their dad. I'm recovering financially from a traumatic divorce and it's financial devastation, and am beginning the daunting process of looking for gainful employment after a long time out to raise my kids. So far I've only been able to find sporadic office temporary jobs, but I can't give up. I'm broke and Social Security is over a decade away!

Other Information:
I'm an enthusiastic knitter. I love to knit gifts for family and friends with luxury yarns. I am also an amateur genealogist compiling my family pedigrees and history for fun and for posterity. I'd love to have a dog again in my household (one that doesn't aggravate my kid's asthma) and I'm addicted to reality TV: not the Jersey Shore or the Bachelor, but the wildlife, hoarding, intervention, makeover and true crime stuff.

Hang in there with the Eat to Live diet, we have been eating unhealthy for many year and then suddenly we are trying to eat healthy and do it right with a snap of our fingers and when it doesn't happen we feel emoticon emoticon emoticon ... so just don't sweat it and get back on the plan. A little meat, dairy, grains, ect is not the end of the world and its better than other stuff that is really bad for you.

I figured its better to eat little more whole grains than to eat something that is really unhealthy (like pizza)

Any time your losing weight your doing great so keep it up and don't hang head in shame for too long.

And keep eating those veggies emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Thanks for your comment on my blog about perfectionism. It IS overwhelming when you have more than 100 lbs to lose. If we think about those numbers too hard, it can make us lose all perspective. You have the right attitude - aiming for better overall health, better sleep, fitting into clothes comfortably. Just keep taking one little step at a time & you will be amazed at how far you'll travel.
