I teach Anatomy and Physiology at a local college. I haven't always been overweight. Much like other college students I put on the traditional freshman 15 but continued to put on weight until I ballooned up to almost 230. On my almost 5'8" frame that actually hurt from time to time. From time to time I've been able to lose weight and once even got down to 175. At that weight, I look skeletal. Most of the time my weight is about 210.

From time to time I've been able to lose weight and once even got down to 175. At that weight, I look skeletal. Most of the time my weight is about 210.

Now, as I approach 45, I want to shed some of the weight and get back to being as physically active as I used to be before graduate school. I tried in the fall of '09 but after some injuries had to stop. When my weight got back over 220 in early 2010 I knew I had to start.

On March 11, I went back to the gym with the intent of training to run a 5K. I was 212 pounds and even though I stand all day had to get used to moving 5K. Two weeks later I started a C25K program. Three weeks in I weigh 204 and now have no trouble walking/jogging four miles. I can run 1.5 miles and even though I have to do it 0.3 miles at a time with some walking in between I feel a lot better than I did just a month ago. I'll never be a marathon runner but I am pretty sure I can run a 5K someday.

June 20, 2010 Update - I ran in my first race on June 10. It took me just under 36 minutes to run the 3.5 Mile Buffalo Corporate Challenge. I now run regularly three days a week and have almost reached my first weight goal.

July 10, 2010 Update - On April 27, I gave myself a belated birthday present. For the first time in a while I weighed under 200 pounds. I have now been able to keep that weight off for two full months and am now down below 190. Yesterday I made a promise to myself and my wife. The first number of my weight will never be a 2 again.

August 31, 2010 Update - I weighed in at 185 this morning - the target weight! I now wear a size 34 pants - haven't done that in 25 years! I now run at least 4 miles three days a week and am training for a 10K.

Frank, thanks so much for taking time from your busy world to read my lengthy account of Saturday's experience. Means so much to me! And lol yep, I broke the shoe rule but didn't feel I had a choice, thankfully it turned out okay.

I appreciate your confidence in my ability to break the 2 hr mark; I believe I can as well, in the right time & under the right conditions, if age doesn't catch me 1st LOL
