Last summer I turned 53, my father died of a heart attack at that same age when I was 19. I had been dreading this age. Last year I made some healthy changes and they have become the secrets to my success! I have lost 26 pounds and I am now at my lowest weight in 16 years! It has taken me about 6 months but it has been so much easier than it was in the past. I don't eat fast food, beef, pork, high sodium foods or sodas. I try to drink at least 60 oz of water, I track all my nutrition and exercise on Sparkpeople.com and have read their nutrition, fitness and motivational articles for over 125 days straight. I walk at least 10,000 steps daily and try new exercises.
The most important lesson I have learned, is to eat in moderation and I am eating to live, not living to eat. I still eat chocolate, but it is gourmet dark chocolate. I've found Talenti Gelato, a half cup serving in a beautiful antique punch cup is my special treat each night! My salty treat is roasted sweet potato fries. I still go out to eat but I make healthy choices, drinking lots of water with my meal and going to a restaurant we can walk or ride our bikes to. I still have pizza but I only have two pieces and tacos are lots of lettuce, tomato, salsa and a little bit of ground turkey and cheese. I measure my food so that I am having the correct portions. Whenever we want a snack, the family favorite is fruit. We love apples, bananas, pineapple, mangoes, tangerines and grapes, they are always on hand.
Yes, eating healthy is more work that just driving through a burger place, but the benefits are immense! After eating this way for 6 months, I don't even hesitate to make those healthy eating decisions, it has become a habit. My blood pressure is 120/80, I can walk for miles, ride my bike 26 miles and swim 300 meters without killing myself. I have had to donate lots of really big clothes to charity and buy new clothes! My husband has lost weight too and we feel like we are dating again! I am also starting to train for a sprint triathlon. 53 has become my favorite age!
I am 53 and I want to be the healthiest I have ever been. I am going to exercise 5-6 days a week for at least 30 minutes. I am going to cut back on sodium and eat more fruits and veggies!
I have dieted and lost and gained a million pounds over the years. I want to try to make this my lifestyle not a diet. My program is to stay within my calorie range and to do some kind of exercise 5-6 days a week and eat cleaner, less processed food. I also plan to drink 8 glasses of water and I am giving up sodas.
I live in the lovely town of Redlands in Southern California. I have too many dogs, 3 cats, 2 birds and several other assorted critters. I do theater, walk, hike with my dog and family, read, sing and ride my bike. I live with my amazing hubby, Alan and my 13 year old son, William. My older son, Ian is in the USCG.
