Down for the Count

Once I passed the "double nickel" (55) I knew I had to set some new goals to keep me around for some more milestones. In the 1990's, I lost about 70 pounds over a three-year period, dropping to around 250#. My diet plan at the time was to simply eat a little less at each meal and -- for the most part -- it worked! With a few fluctuations, I'd kept most of those pounds off for over ten years.

In this millenium, I found my weight edging up. In March of 2007 I was stretching the threads holding my jacket buttons on, weighing in at 272#. Realizing that I (1) weighed too much, (2) had some lab results that were out-of-bounds, and (3) want to grow old with my wife (since it will take her longer to grow old), I determined I would lose weight. In the last part of 2007 I worked my way down to 252#.

In 2008, Wendy and I started intentionally losing weight together. I got down to an all-time low of 215# (hadn't been there since junior high), but a fall down a flight of stairs in June of last year put me out of the exercising routine for many months due to severe back pain. Consequently, I gained about 20# back in the year that followed. Now at the end of summer 2009, I'm improving in the pain department and getting back serious about getting back down past 215# again and down to the 90kg neighborhood (198#).

I will weight 90 kilograms by our anniversary, February 14, 2010.

SparkPeople has been a Godsend. The program, support, motivation, fitness and nutrition tracking tools make this all so much easier.

My Goals:
1. Buy a new (smaller) wardrobe.
2. Wean myself off of some medications.
3. Weigh 198# by Wendy's and my anniversary, February 14, 2010.

My Program:
I'm counting my calories and my other nutrition numbers, avoiding snacks. My wife and I exercise together, either walking for three miles a day or riding our bicycles for a longer distance.
All this while still making allowances for real butter.

Personal Information:
A Seattle native, I live in Monroe (WA) with my wonderful wife, Wendy, two step-kids and an aging step-dog (who tries to walk with us!). I have three grown children of my own. My youngest defends freedom in the US Army.

Wendy and I both work in Bothell (WA). I am very active in the local Chamber of Commerce. I like walking, travel, sightseeing and a great steak.

I've been a pastor, chaplain, wedding and funeral officiant, and partner in a convenience store business.

Other Information:
My favorite movies are Fireproof, Strange Brew, The Blues Brothers, Blues Brothers 2000 and Forrest Gump. In college I had a band, "Gomer Gump and the Groundhogs." Cottage cheese triggers my gag reflex, so I have to eat peanut butter instead.

First of all, congrats on the weight loss! You're doing really good. I just happened to notice you sent me a balloons goodie. Thanks! But can I ask why? I suppose you don't have to have a reason to be nice, but I was just wondering how you came across my page and decided to send me one. I appreciate it!
