Dragonboater

Struggling to stay lean for canoe racing, despite the aging process and my raging appetite. Specifically, dragonboat and outrigger canoe. What is a dragonboat? It's like a giant 40' canoe with 20 people paddling in sync. It's a sprint sport, with races averaging ~2 minutes. An outrigger canoe is only about 22' long. It's like what you see in Hawaii 5-0, a canoe meant for the ocean with an "ama" or outrigger out to one side to provide extra stability.

I am athletic but I like to eat a LOT, so my weight varies as I restrict my diet and run, or just let myself go and eat whatever I want during lulls in my training. It was a bit of a shock to see my weight creep up near 150 last winter - I'm pretty short so that's a lot for me (an unhealthy BMI). And it almost took me out of the running for the national dragonboat team. Luckily, SP taught me about portion control and I enjoyed a fabulous week in Tampa at Worlds last August.

I recently had to take a bunch of time off workout out because of radiation treatment for DCIS, which is Stage 0 breast cancer. The good news is that it was tiny and non-invasive, and it was all removed with breast-conserving surgery (aka lumpectomy) last summer. The bad news is that I now at much greater risk of breast cancer, so I had to do radiation therapy and start taking Tamoxifen. I also felt sorry for myself a lot last Fall and ate too much, between the health issues and a crumbling relationship. So basically I gained 15 pounds back after Worlds.

Now it's a new year and I am back on track to the make the most out of 2012. I started working out at least 5 days a week again, as soon as my skin healed from radiation. It took me a good 6-8 weeks to regain strength and fitness but putting the time in eventually paid off. I started tracking in Jan and lost weight, but then traveled to Mexico and Canada and gained it all back.

Racing season is almost upon us so I really need to get back into shape. Based on national time trials from last year, I have been selected to race in Hong Kong at the Club Crew World Championships. I still may have to time trial for seat selections or to get picked to be one of the few women in the Mixed Crew, though, so it's time to buckle down and get mean and lean.

My Goals:
Need to take off the "happy" weight I gained traveling and hanging out with my new gf - good thing she likes to run with me and eats cleaner than I do! She gave me protein powder so I am doing a lot better getting in my protein after intense workouts.

My Program:
-paddling 5 times a week

-running 3-4 times a week

Will I find time to bring the ST back in?

Degennan, I found your page by searching for dragonboat. I was hoping there was a team for it....in any case I was hoping you would answer a question for me. I am just in the stage of considering joining a team. I have gone out a couple of times.

My lower back gets sore the next days. Did you experience that when you first started? I am trying to figure out if I am just not that strong, or if m.b. dragonboat ing is not for my body.
