Who have I been? Who am I now? Who do I want to be?

I have been a visitor at SP since January 2009. I have had ups and downs with my weight and health. While I enjoy the outdoors and being active, I have allowed other things and people to take precedence over me, my needs and desires. Currently I weigh exactly the same as I did in January 2009 - 172 lbs. At only 48, I see and feel my health deteriorating quickly.

I have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, digestion problems, sluggish colon, low energy, loss of balance and poor posture. I feel if I do not do something about myself now, I will never be able.

I have chosen the word "giving" to live by this year. I am "giving" myself permission to be me. I want to be confident, healthy and fit.
Eventhough I am only 5 ft. 3 in., I am going to feel as though I can jump and touch the moon when I reach my goals!

Thank you for commenting on my blog. This journey has been incredible and Spark Friends and the community were such an important part of it. Posting a blog touting a 50 lb. weight loss was something I used to only dream of. Thank you for being there as my dream came true! Spark on!
Have a fabulous day!!

emoticon Greetings and emoticon

Congrats on taking the next step to reaching a healthier you by getting active with SparkPeople - it's a great community, wonderful resources and fantastic support.

I am SOOOO SORRY to hear about your shingles - my dad had that and before I saw his experience, I never thought much about it. But he was in so much pain, he literally wanted to commit suicide for awhile - and this from a guy who generally had very HIGH pain tolerance!!

Anyway, he was very elderly when this occurred and he did have residual pain for more than 3 yrs before he died - it was helped by a drug called Gabapentin but there is a newer drug that has fewer side effects. The problem with the gabapentin was it messed up his mind and memory, even caused hallucinations at times until his body adjusted. You would not be rock climbing on that stuff!!

At any rate, if you do have lingering pain, be sure to ask your doctor about appropriate medications - and again, I am very sorry to hear of ANYONE who gets that - I was so scared, I immediately got a vaccination to help prevent it and definitely hope this is one experience I can 'skip' for myself!

Please check out the SparkTeams - I think you will find a lot of others 'just like you' there. You can choose SparkTeams by age group, lifestyle or interests, geographic location or several other ways - some of the teams you might like include the Official 10-minute Daily Exercise Streak Challenge, Starting Over Weekly Mini-Challenge Team, 10k Steps A Day and Motivation & Positive Attitude Plan but there are so many to choose from, you can have a great time looking for the ones that seem to fit you best! In fact, I suggest joining more than one group, post your intro there and write blogs as often as you can - you will find tons of friends and support that way, I promise!!

In my experience, SparkPeople is like a emoticon in some ways - it's lots of fun and easy to make friends because we're all in this together. I like the way a HEALTHY LIFESTYLE is emphasized instead of a 'quick fix wonder diet' so it's good for people wanting to lose weight, maintain a previous loss, get healthier, improve fitness and many other goals - it's about waaaaaay more than 'just' losing weight so you have definitely come to the right place!

If you ever need any help using features of the site, there are tutorial videos under the HELP section that can show you how to use the features of the site. You can also find them on the START page and several other places on the site.

If you haven't already discovered The Spark book and/or the SparkDiet linked at the bottom of the START page, check them out - the program is simple but extremely effective. There is a TON of information on this site - so much it might even seem overwhelming but fortunately we don't have to 'digest' everything at once! The FastBreak program is a good way to start.

Another nice thing about SparkPeople is that we have permission to be human - we don't have to change everything at once or be in a hurry to reach our goals. Take a few baby steps and then a few more and before you know it, you'll have completed a long journey - I hope you enjoy this community as much as I do - it teaches us how to make positive lifetime changes because that's the only thing that will work over time!

Best wishes to you! emoticon

SparkPeople really(!!) helped me through my recovery from surgery, and I hope that it has the same wonderful effect on you. :)

SparkPeople has cool new 5k programs that you might like. They're called "5k Your Way", and there are different versions for different goals. Here's a link:
