One Year Challenge: Dec. 1 to Dec. 1

As the new year crept closer and closer, I began to think about a challenge for the year to come -- something that would really push me to my limit, but would have a payoff that made it worth it. I mulled and discussed and negotiated, and in the end I decided on the following:

* 100% adherence to a Slow Carb/Primal Lifestyle combination that will work well in our family. Basic principles are:

As the new year crept closer and closer, I began to think about a challenge for the year to come -- something that would really push me to my limit, but would have a payoff that made it worth it. I mulled and discussed and negotiated, and in the end I decided on the following:

* 100% adherence to a Slow Carb/Primal Lifestyle combination that will work well in our family. Basic principles are:
* 6 days per week
* No grains, no fruit, no dairy, no sugar, no white potatoes or corn
* Less than 50 net carbs per day
* Primarily organic meats and vegetables
* And on the 7th day, she rested (per Slow Carb guidelines)
* 225 minutes of cardio each week

Why cardio specifically? Because it's very, very hard for me. I have no trouble doing strength workouts or Pilates, so no reason to count those. But I hate cardio, and without a good motivator, I won't do it consistently.

My goals are specifically behavioral goals, not results-based. I hope to lose weight and gain strength and functionality, and I really want to get my blood sugar under control. But I would rather base the challenge (or the payoff) on performing the *right* behaviors *consistently*.

What's at stake? 3 weeks off work and a vacation! The challenge runs Dec. 1 to Dec. 1. Hopefully in Dec. 2012, I'll be able to do a whole lot of skiing!

I meant to write to tell you how wonderful the animal communication workshop you attended sounded. I just got my golden therapy certified and one of the members is a "communicator." She gives the animals a blessing after every meeting which is so cool!!!

Hi!! Oh good, I'm glad to hear that! I was afraid you got so discouraged that you dropped out completely. Which would be a shame because you were doing so well! Good for you for still going on despite being swamped, that's hard. I'm hoping I can too, when I get busy again.

Not much new here! Just maintaining the running and weight lifting 6x per week. I keep it minimal so that I can stick to it. Always the same distance running, very very gradual increases with the weight training. An hour a day max of working out works for me for now.
The only new things have been... Trying to keep up a streak of going to bed by midnight or 1am, also to drink 8 glasses of water per day, meditate for 10 minutes a day, eat two servings of fruit or vegetables, and listen to a 'motivating song'. I'm just trying to get a full week of doing all of that, combined with my workout efforts. I'm trying to be patient because I have to keep in mind, all this stuff is new to me, and habits can take months to make..
Missed your inspiring presence on Sparkpeople! Good luck with the work!
