2016 has to be better!

I guess now is a good time to update this. I am now 59, almost 60. YIKES! Where did that come from? Anyway, I am now at my heaviest ever. Health issues, depression, and inertia have all taken a toll on me. I NEED to climb out from under this miasma, and get my life back on track. I sure hope I can get my butt in gear, and get this done! :-)

I figure now is a good time to update this a little. I am 55, been on SP for a couple of years and lots of health changes. I've been recently diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, in addition to all the other things that time and poor life choices have wrought on my body. I still struggle daily with eating right and exercising, along with continuing my college education. I have a new little grand-daughter that I want to see grow up, go to college, and someday have children of her own. So... just gotta keep on keepin' on, as they say.

I'm 53 years old, and have struggled with weight since High School. As I grew older, my weight grew with me. Now I have diabetes, along with hypothyroidism, peripheral neuropathy, Interstitial Cystitis (IC), menopause, GERD, high blood pressure, allergies, & asthma. Using this site has helped me keep up the motivation that the Diabetes diagnoses gave me, with the strategies, inspiration & help from others like me. I need to get it done. I will get it done. I AM DOING IT!!!!

DEB, my DH was one of the first people to use a machine in this area. I had noticed he stopped breathing in the night he never snored and I mentioned it to my allergist. We jumped through hoops to get his first machine . It was CPAP and he would wake up and tear it off his face and throw it. He felt like he was choking. We went everywhere to find the solution. His Dr wanted him on Oxygen at night DH said no way.
I went on the internet and read about the Bi Pap machine . The info was from AUSTRALIA but I persisted and found ResMed in US. I e-mailed them the problems and they gave me the info. I took it in to our Dr and he followed through with it.
We got DH first BiPap machine and the pharmacy tech had not seen one. He had to do another sleep study to set it up.

This machine blows only when you are breathing IN, as you breathe
against it the air backs off.

DH explained when it is really windy and you walk in to the wind it takes your breath away, I realised what he was experiencing.
Now we are on Medicare we seem to be offered new parts way too often. The gaskets have to be very clean. Any oil on the mask allows a leak. DH had an outbreak of really red dry skin. They thought he was having a reaction but it was the mask, he is supposed to wash it every day. The first ones were every week.
Now he has had 2 new very small machines in the last 3 months. The first compact was for Medicare requirements. It had to have a chip put in to make sure it is being used every day. The first machine was perfect but the chips could not read the info so it had to be changed and another chip for 30 days. The chip is sent to medicare.
If it is not used for 30 days they will not pay for the machine.
So many people were not using them and they actully were selling them. I Had someone ask to buy the old ones from us. I decided we would not do that in case they had problems with it and it could be awkward we gave them back to the pharmacy and they will refurbish them for people who can not afford them It seems safer that way.

DH still uses a full face mask, His face is getting thinner and the masks are hard to fit but we know if he does not use it he will need oxygen because he forgets to breathe so many times in the night.
We even take it on camping trips with us that is how we keep him healthy and energised.
PLEASE talk to the Technician at the pharmacy. They have really small masks that fit only over your nose, they have nose pillows you put in your nose like you see on people who use oxygen.
Go to and you will see what there is there to choose from. I feel DH machine is a real blessing to him and he knows it.
I hope this helps you, Pat in Maine.
