Looking For That Thing Called "Life"

Hi! I'm Donna.
I'm 36 years old.
I'm a single mom of a fantastic daughter.
I moved to Gastonia, NC summer of 2014 to help care for my mother after she became ill with CHF and COPD. Always fun when you come for a visit and meet the local EMS and ICU staff. She's doing much better now.

I am also officially "Disabled." I suffer from chronic severe pain from a degenerative spine. By the age of 29 I had 8 herniated discs, stenosis, and nerve damage in my neck and lower back. Now I have knee issues as well, the doc thinks it's patellofemoral syndrome, also known as "Runner's knee". And new Summer 2013 - Lyme's Disease! YAY! Ugh!
I was an RN before my back gave out.
This is one of my attempts to "Find Life Again" after this back injury has taken so much of who I used to be away from me. I go through phases on Spark People. Sometimes I'll have a run of being on here everyday, then I'll have a break of a few months, then I'll be back.
Hope you all have a great day!

My Goals:
#1) REDUCE PAIN!!! Actually make and go to doctor's appointments, don't wuss out.

#2) Be able to perform activities of daily living without crying.

#3) Forget looking better in a swimsuit, I'd just like to look better in anything!

#4) Improve my lipid profile - lower total and LDL cholesterol, increase HDL's, and lower triglycerides

#5) Improve glucose tolerance and lower blood sugar - DONE! A1c was 5!

My Program:
Baby Steps:
#1) Do my basic physical therapy exercises 3x/wk minimum

#2) Try to eat smaller meals and snacks more often. As weird as it sounds, I often "forget" to eat.

#3) Remember my daily Vitamins and supplements

#4) Increase activities that count as "Cardio" - bought Julianne Hough's Cardio Ballroom, interest in dancing re-Sparked! Also bought a new T-Tapp workout. :-)

#5) Improve my mental health by not isolating! Socialize more. Find some quality of life and not feel alone! Joined Meetup.com.

#6) Be mindful of diet and what nutrients what I eat provides, and how much junk things add. Decrease GMO's and avoid artificial sweetners

#7) Continue working with doctor's to find adequate pain management that will let me move more. New Spine doc 11/6! Pain mgmt- doc's working on finding someone.

#8) Reconnect with spirituality.

donna, just a short note 4 Arachnoiditits. I'll write more when up to it. AA changes the flow of CSF within the menengies of the spine, a form of menegitis. spidering of scar tissue usually in dura. Incurable, pain of cancer with no immenent relief.

Donna,

I am sorry for taking so long in writing back. I am fighting fatigue all the time. I have not been feeling well. In addition to the Adhesive Arachnoiditis and likely connected, I have had a UTI for over a year now, I have a constant low grade fever and worst of all is the stomach pain. I have to give myself a shot every other day which makes me feel horrible ( sweaty, mid to lower intestinal pains) and for about 8 months now I have been having very sharp pains which get mostly covered by the morphine but pain reaching 8-9 has been occurring up to my shoulder. It fits pancreatitis but there were no stones only the duct that drains the bile is super slow. They are treating it as slow gastric motility and I feel that it may not be. I told my folks I will not be able to live in this way and I mean it. I am going to get a referral to either Shands or Mayo. Mayo is closer in Jacksonville but when I first went there when I stopped being able to void or walk, their so called working together in all dynamics was just a case of neurology trying to get me into drug rehab rather than searching for the problem , which was the Adhesive Arachnoiditis and the need for a pedicle Subtraction Osteotomy. But Shands is 4-5 hours away and Mayo is 1.5 hours away. Any thoughts since you were a nurse?

Are you better still since the GYN surgery. How is Sparks going? I am about the same. I gained back 15 lbs and stay there now. How is your back doing now? Better, worse? Any prospects for improvement? I saw you were going to an Interventional Pain doctor, does she/he help? I saw an Intractable pain doctor as you saw in my page and the liquid morphine has been the biggest help. Also the genetic testing for pain meds helped. I learned most pain meds my body processes 70%-200% faster than the norm and that most antidepressants are just the opposite but slower?
