Time to get Re-Sparked

I have been Sparking now for over 3 years. I was sick and tired of being so overweight I couldn't enjoy life.

Last year, I pretty much left the Sparkpeople site for about 5 months while I finished up my PhD dissertation. I had been in the Ph.D. program for almost 5 and a half years, and in October, 2012 I cleared a major hurtle in my dissertation progress - getting all the permissions I needed from university to perform my research (anyone who has had to deal with a university ...
I have been Sparking now for over 3 years. I was sick and tired of being so overweight I couldn't enjoy life.

Last year, I pretty much left the Sparkpeople site for about 5 months while I finished up my PhD dissertation. I had been in the Ph.D. program for almost 5 and a half years, and in October, 2012 I cleared a major hurtle in my dissertation progress - getting all the permissions I needed from university to perform my research (anyone who has had to deal with a university IRB knows how hard that can be). It took me almost 3 years to get past that point, but once I got past that hurtle, I was determined to finish - there was NO way I was going to leave my effort as an ABD (all but dissertation). I was GOING to finish.

So five months later, after a lot of very late nights and weekends at the computer, I was finished! While I was very satisfied that I had finally attained a life long achievement (and at 58 no less), all the late night work and inattentiveness to my exercise and eating habits had seriously taken their toll on my weight maintenance efforts.

The predictable results were that I gained back most (not all) of what I had worked so hard to get off. That's the bad news. But I am not going to 'beat myself up' for it - I am just going to get back on the horse, so to speak, and re-focus on all those great habits that got me fit in the first place. Yesterday I started with 600 yards in the swimming pool, tonight I will try and get on the bicycle trainer - and pretty soon, spring will be upon us, and I will be able to break out the road bike once again and start getting back into shape.

This is 'I have taken my life back' part 4 - I'm excited, but I'm also taking it one day at a time.

Onward!

My Goals:
- Lose 40 more pounds on the way to losing more than 100 pounds in order to live a much more healthy lifestyle again.

My Program:
It's back to the bike - of course! I hope to supplement my riding with some swimming, and some weight training. But it was my passion for cycling that helped me shed 80 pounds, and I am going to return to what works.

I have learned that becoming healthy (and losing weight) is a holistic process of nutrition, hydration, exercise and sleep.

Personal Information:
I live in Seoul, South Korea and work with a IT contractor for the US military. I'm not very comfortable with revealing to much personal information, so if you want to chat, you'll have to send me a spark-mail.

Other Information:
I believe that learning to love yourself, love others, develop meaningful relationships, and laughing alot are the most important things in life.

Hang in and hang on. I know you are going to get back in shape. Don't let me race walk past you on your bike.

Good job Dave! Keep going emoticon

emoticon emoticon emoticon The Motivator of the Day.

Jack LaLanne lived to age 96 and worked out two hours every single day. His dad died at age 50 from heart failure and Jack was a sickly child, so he knew he had to work hard as his odds weren't good. He showed what a positive attitude and hard work can do. Jack always said you can't work your body to hard because it just gets stronger to meet the challenge you give it.
