Happy Texan

Just a Happy Texan wanting to get in shape to enjoy life to the fullest. Happily married for 19 years with two great kids. We love hiking and camping and just being outdoors. In the off time, I like reading and doing Sudoku.

I lost a bit of weight during the summer of 2007 using my Bodybugg and counting calories. I ran/walked a 5k at 230 pounds. Then, sadly, I let the weight creep back on.

February 2008 I joined Weight Watchers and lost down to 195 pounds by July 1st. Again, I let weight creep back on. 20 pounds!

I used Weight Watchers again to get me back on track but soon stopped attending meetings and just started counting calories (keeping it between 1400-1700 right now) and exercising more. The SparkPeople January Bootcamp was HUGE in helping me get back to an exercise schedule.

I try to eat cleaner than I did before but I still have processed foods from time to time. I also haven't given up going out to eat. I just try to fit in the calories and make better choices.

In October of 2010 I was diagnosed with a bad case of insulin resistance, PCOS, high blood pressure, low iron and vitamin D, and some messed up hormones.

I was put on metformin but could not tolerate it and developed chest pains. I've been told by my doctor to follow the plan in the Insulin Resistance Diet book: limiting carbs and combining them with protein. My mom lost 44 pounds in 3 months eating this way. Yeah, she has insulin resistance too.

This is a lifestyle change. It's forever. Fad diets don't work! You must be willing to make the change permanently.

It is a battle but I will never give up. It takes perseverance. It takes discipline. It takes sweat and sometimes tears but it's worth it.

"Stubbornly persist, and you will find that the limits of your stubbornness go well beyond the stubbornness of your limits. " ~Robert Brault

My Goals:
April Goals:

*lose some pounds

*run 3x per week (training for half marathon)

*strength train at least 2x per week

Long term Goals:
My goal is to wear my clothes confidently and ultimately to be able to hike the Grand Canyon rim to rim. I want to live life to the fullest without limitations because of my shape or weight.

Also want to be friends with the dressing room.

My Program:
Walking, running, cycling, hiking, canoeing. Just staying active. Will be adding strength training back soon.

I have insulin resistance so I have started to eat low carb and the weight has been steadily melting off and I don't feel hungry or deprived at all.

*Try something new each month (could be a new exercise, food or just a new experience). To keep life fun and interesting.

*Force myself to take at least one day per week for rest.

Personal Information:
My name is Kelly and I live with my husband of 20 years and two great kids near Houston, TX. I love being outdoors and camping and just having fun. I feel like my weight has kept me from enjoying my life to the fullest. That is going to change. I'm committed to being the best me I can be.
