Daisy's Losing It

One year ago I started this journey to lose some weight and become more healthy. So far I've lost just over 30 pounds and found that SparkPeople.com has become my lifeline for keeping track of progress, goals, and what I eat and I could not live without it. The community and tools are a great source of information and inspiration.

I do blog here occasionally, but I also have a personal blog at whenonedoorcloses.wordpress.com where I journal about weight loss and other topics that are on my mind.

This year I'm looking forward to reaching my goal of 85 pounds lost. Only 55 to go. I can do it!

Hey Daisy,

I saw your comment over on the 'Burn 100 calories in 10 minutes' DailySpark blog, and wanted to share my own experience as a 200lb+ runner. I was also really surprised that Spark estimated my calories burned for a 30 minute run at only about 275-300, especially since I got back red-faced, bent-double, and feeling like my demise was imminent. However, as I learned when I got my heart rate monitor, the SP estimates don't necessarily take into account fitness level and weight - they use an average, for obvious reasons, but for those of us starting with a lower baseline level of fitness or a higher than average weight, it isn't always representative. My heart rate monitor estimated my calories burned at 575 for a 30 minute run at ~ the same pace as the one Spark rated a 275-300! So... there is virtue in 'throwing your weight around' as it were, and we big girls can feel good about getting out there and going hard. If you have a chance and the budget to pick up a good HR monitor, I would highly recommend it, but if not, at least know that you're getting better "bang for your buck" than the tracker estimates might tell you!

Good luck with your weight loss journey!
